LIHU‘E — Kukui Grove Center and Kaua‘i Resilience Project are in the midst of preparing for this year’s Trunk-or-Treat event that will unfold on Oct. 29 starting as early as 3 p.m.,and running until 6 p.m.
During last year’s Trunk-or-Treat, more than 500 attendees walked the decorated trunks and enjoyed the ghoulish antics of the trunkers.
“Halloween falls on a weekday this year,” said Nannie Ann Apalla of the Kaua‘i Resilience Project. “It is our aim to provide a fun and safe space for our community to gather in celebration with family and friends. We are in need of volunteer ‘trunkers’ to make this an event a success for everyone. We’re reaching out to our willing and able bodied community champions to join us.
Volunteers, including groups and families, need to register online at https://forms.gle/GPnjdLA3E57zv42g9 by Oct. 23.
Apalla said this year’s theme focus is “Social Emotional Learning” or SEL
“We encourage our partners and volunteers to incorporate the theme focus in creating a team’s activity or interactive ‘trunk’ station,” Apalla said. “Some suggested SEL themed station ideas include: Identifying Emotions where children spin the wheel of emotions and needs to act out the emotion the wheel lands on; Say Boo to Bullying where participants brainstorm all of the ways they can show kindness and say ‘boo’ to bullying; Unwrap Assumptions where it’s pretty hard to tell what’s under a mummy with all the wrappings. The same goes for assumptions. It’s hard to get to know people if we can’t look past our own assumptions about them.”
Volunteers are also asked to provide giveaways and any resource materials for parents that will attend with their children. Apalla said last year’s attendance of more than 500 people includes two keiki for each adult as a guide for anticipating how much giveaways to budget for.
Additionally, awards will be given out during the event, including the People’s Choice for the Best Volunteer Trunk Decoration.
The 2023 Trunk-or-Treat will take place on Oct. 29 in the parking lot fronting The UPS Store at Kukui Grove Center. Early Entry for preregistered participants starts at 3 p.m. The public is welcome from 4 to 6 p.m., while Halloween goodies last.
