PRINCEVILLE — With more than 300 participants challenging the ‘Ohana Fit Fest course, organizers of the 10th annual ‘Ohana Fit Fest deemed it a “fabulous success” following its Sept. 30 run.
“This was the largest turnout in our event history with more than 300 participants,” said Ken Rosenthal. “This was the 10th anniversary for Ohana Fit Fest, and this year’s proceeds will benefit our keiki through grants that will be donated to North Shore elementary schools to help fund fitness programs and equipment.”
The Kaua‘i North Shore Community Foundation, in partnership with the Makai Golf Club and IheartPrinceville, offered the 5K-ish route that started at the Prince Albert Park in Princeville, winding along the Princeville path.
The course then moved through the ocean-view holes of the Makai Golf Club before entering the mauka, or woods, where participants climbed, crawled and tested their coordination on obstacles before finishing back at Prince Albert Park.
“New for this year were team awards for the fastest team, team with the most spirit and the largest team,” Rosenthal said.
The Kilauea Elementary School, with 45 participants, finished as the largest, and fastest team to earn the $200 Tahiti Nui and $200 Ama prizes. For being the fastest team, Kilauea Phys Ed earned a pizza party at the North Shore General Store.
The Kaua‘i Christian Academy fielded 35 participants to earn the second largest team and the Hanalei Elementary School turned out 19 participants.
The Surfrider Foundation was deemed the Team with Most Spirit to earn a Lapperts ice cream party.
Individually, Saniago Patino, 22, from Lihu‘e topped the overall 5K-ish obstacle run, stopping the clocks at 26 minutes, 19 seconds. Forty-seven-year-old Bethanie Werner of Kapa‘a was the top overall female with a 33:12 run.
