PUHI — Host Kaua‘i High School placed four of its boys in the top 10 of the 81-runner field on Saturday to win the latest Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation 5,000 meter cross-country meet with 31 points.
Racing over the 3-mile course set up around the Kaua‘i Community College, the Red Raiders were led by Ty Clark, the second overall finisher below Kapa‘a’s Saxon Kimball, who broke the 18-minute mark with a run of 18 minutes, 30.79 seconds in clear, if somewhat humid conditions. Clark followed in 19:04.95.
Kimball led the Kapa‘a boys team to a second place finish with 57 points after being the sole Warrior finisher in the top 10 spots.
Island School boys placed two runners in the top 10, but ended up in third place with 70 points. Waimea also placed two runners in the top 10 finishing spots, but trailed the Voyagers by three points at 73 points.
Island School girls placed four runners in the top 10 spots of the 48-runner field to claim first place honors with 34 points.
Kapa‘a High School girls also finished with four runners in the top 10 spots, but settled for second place with 42 points after its first runner, Gwyneth Adams, crossed the tape in fifth overall, and its fourth runner, Sage Hofmann, was the 10th finisher.
Kaua‘i’s Aileah Villatora was the top overall finisher, as in the previous races. But following her, the next Raider finisher filled in the fourth overall spot to give the redshirts 46 points, just four points behind Kapa‘a.
The Waimea girls finished with 106 points to round out the leaderboard.
This Saturday’s KIF cross-country races will be hosted by Island School. The first race starts at 4 p.m. at the Island School campus.
