LIHU‘E — A Longs Drugs CVS staffer manning the flu shot administration tent said the free one-day, drive-thru clinic hosted by Longs Drugs and the Hawai‘i Medical Service Association was for the community.
“We have to keep up with all the vaccines,” said one of the drive-thru customers who had a preregistered time for her family’s shots. “My husband has cancer, so we have to be current with all the protections.”
She was surprised to get two pokes instead of one after discovering the clinic was offering more than free flu shots.
In the hours leading to the clinic opening at Kukui Grove Center south parking lot, organizers added the latest COVID vaccines as well as shots for RSV, pneumonia, and shingles.
“And, it’s free?” a family asked, making the transition from the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation cross-country races at Kaua‘i Community College to the air rifle matches at the Island School range. “We’re going to have to check it out afterwards. You don’t need an appointment?”
The Longs Drugs staffer said this is the third year they’ve done the drive-thru clinics offering flu shots. Saturday’s event was the second year they’ve hosted the event at the south parking lot.
Santa in Paradise, also known as Phil Worwa of disc golf, was another registered patient preparing for the upcoming busy holiday season by getting his latest flu and COVID shots.
“And RSV?” Worwa asked one of the check-in monitors. “There are too many pretty women getting me all confused. Ho, ho, ho.”
In addition to being updated with the vaccines, patients enjoyed a Longs Drugs swag bag filled with goodies from sponsors.
