LIHU‘E — A woman was killed on Wednesday morning when she was struck by a vehicle while walking down the middle of a northbound lane on Kapule Highway.
The incident, which happened at approximately 4:50 a.m. near mile marker 2.5 on Kapule Highway, marked the third traffic-related fatality on Kaua‘i this year.
“According to a preliminary report, a 34-year-old female of Kapa‘a operating a Ford E-350 box truck traveling northbound on Kapule Highway collided with a female pedestrian walking in the middle of the northbound lane,” the Kaua‘i Police Department (KPD) said.
“While the driver was uninjured, American Medical Response personnel pronounced the unidentified woman dead at the scene.”
The incident shut down Kapule Highway, between Ahukini Road and Kuhio Highway, in both directions for roughly two hours while the KPD’s Traffic Safety Section conducted an on-scene investigation
Speed and alcohol do not appear to be factors in the crash at this time.
“However, the investigation remains ongoing, and toxicology reports are pending,” the KPD said.
