KOKE‘E — A California man died after he apparently fell off Waipo‘o Falls Trail while hiking on Friday morning.
Mark Debarr, 66, was on the trail shortly after 10:10 a.m. when the incident happened, the Kaua‘i Police Department (KPD) said. His body was located approximately 120 feet below Waipo‘o Falls.
“Personnel with the Kaua‘i Police Department, Kaua‘i Fire Department, including firefighters with the Waimea fire station, Air 1, Rescue 3 and the on-duty battalion chief assisted in recovering the victim,” the KPD said on early Friday evening.
Foul play is not suspected in Debarr’s death. An autopsy is pending. It was not clear if Debarr was hiking by himself or was accompanied by other people.
Volunteers with Life’s Bridges, a grief counseling service, and the Visitor Aloha Society of Kaua‘i, a nonprofit that provides emergency needs for visitors, are assisting the victim’s family.
The Waipo‘o Falls Trail, which ends at Waipo‘o Falls, is located in Koke‘e State Park. The trail measures approximately 3.6 miles roundtrip.
