Robb Jones was a familiar face behind the beverage station during Kaua‘i Society of Artists’ receptions like the one on Sept. 15 that opened the 2023 Art Kaua‘i exhibit, which runs through Oct. 27. The winner of the Robb Jones Memorial Award was announced as Samuel Schryver for his “Still Alive on the West Side” piece, which also earned a Hawai‘i State Foundation on Culture and the Arts recognition award.

One of the pleasant surprises at the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation girls volleyball matches at Clem Gomes Gym (mahalo Coach Jon Kobayashi and the Menehune Athletic Department for the hospitality) was the appearance of Hoku’s food truck, which, according to Joyce Evens, stays for the entire game … makes a great stop for post-match dinner, especially if the match goes five sets.

That kind of homegrown food (nonprofit community groups are serving food as a fundraising effort at the upcoming Fall Festival at Kekaha Neighborhood Center on Oct. 7, too!) is one of the draws of westside events.
Kudos to the Puakea Golf Course on hosting the Hawai‘i State Junior Golf Association/First Tee Kaua‘i Junior Championship that allowed our budding golfers to join the field of more than 55 golfers that O‘ahu visitors said is not that big. Kudos, too, to Chef Kristen Yanagawa of Puakea Grill who will be a guest chef in the all-wahine chef lineup at the 5th annual Po‘ipu Food &Wine Festival that will be kicking off later in October … tickets (get yours before they sell out!) are available online at www.poipufoodandwinefestival.com.
OK, so is Hoku’s going to be at his regular spot at the Menehune Product Fair on Saturday when two of the three KIF events take place in Waimea?
