KAPA‘A — Island School and Kapa‘a High School girls each placed four finishers in the top 10 on Saturday at the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation cross-country races held at Kapa‘a High School.
The difference came down to the fifth runner, when Kolohaiaheahe Kuhaulua stopped the clocks at 24 minutes, 49.62 seconds for the 12th overall finish that was good enough to place the Lady Voyagers team in first place with 32 points.
That was nearly 19 ticks ahead of Rayko Farias of the Kapa‘a team, who crossed the line in 13th place with a 25:08.46 run to place the Lady Warriors in second with 43 points.
Kaua‘i High School girls, who showed strong during the practice meet at Island School last week, saw its lead runner Aileah Villatora confused at the final-turn marker and crossed a second back of the pack leader Ashlyn Worley of Island School.
But the Red Raider ladies had its third through fifth scoring runners crossing out of the top 10 for 52 points and third place. The Waimea High School girls finished in fourth with 113 points.
The boys’ field set a strong pace for the 5,000 meter course, when the top 15 finishers broke the 20-minute mark with the top four finishers setting 18-minute marks.
Kobe Claussen set the pace for the redshirts, who pushed seven runners across the line in the top 10 positions with top finisher Saxon Kimball of Kapa‘a stopping the clocks at 18:11.74.
The surge of redshirts gave the Kaua‘i boys top honors with 25 points, followed by Kapa‘a with 65 points.
Waimea boys followed with 72 points, six points ahead of Island School’s 78 points.
