Flora Elizabeth Leialoha Ornellas
Flora Elizabeth Leialoha Ornellas, 83, of Anahola, passed away in Lihu‘e on July 31, 2023. She was born in Lihu‘e on April 3, 1940, and was a homemaker.
She was preceded in passing by her husband of 52 years John Ornellas Jr., parents Stanley Manaia Sr., Elizabeth Leialoha Oana, siblings Stanely “Smokey” Oana Jr. and Eleanor “Leina” Carvalho.
She is survived by children Johnette (Patrick) Kinzie, Pualani Ornellas, Roland (Tida) Ornellas, Randal “Kaipo” Ornellas, brother Rossiter (Vicky) Oana, six grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and three great-great grandchildren.
Private services will be held by the family. However, they invite all friends and family to Kaua‘i Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home for the interment of both Flora and John Ornellas on Sept. 8, at noon.

Barbara Schumacher Bales
Barbara Schumacher Bales passed away at Wilcox Medical Center on July 29, 2023, at the age of 92. She was born in Lihu‘e on Feb. 22, 1931. She served as an elementary school teacher for 42 years and taught at the former Hanama‘ulu School and Elsie H. Wilcox Elementary School.
She was preceded in death by husband Edward Bales, parents Frederick and Jennie Schumacher, sisters Jeanette (Thomas) Hines and Priscilla (Melvin) Alencastre.
She is survived by daughter Bonnie (Max) Ocariza, granddaughters Suzanne Ocariza, Shannon (Cheng-Hsin) Chang, and one great-grandson.
Friends may visit with the family on Saturday, Sept. 9, at Lihu‘e Lutheran Church, German Hill. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. with the service to follow at 10 a.m. Burial will be held immediately after the service at Lihu‘e Lutheran Church Cemetery.

Solidad Manaday Lagazo
Solidad Manaday Lagazo, of Kekaha, passed away on June 29, 2023, at Wilcox Medical Center at the age of 87. She was born on Dec. 14, 1935. She worked as an aide for Yamaguchi Bus Service until 2021.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Genaro Tabing Lagazo Sr., parents Carlos Corpuz Manaday, Valentina Alejandro Manaday, daughter Valerie Ann Lagazo, grandson Jerry Lagazo Jr., siblings Rosalia Fontanilla, Andria Manaday, Pacita Boro and Martin Manaday.
She is survived by sons Calvin (Valerie) Lagazo, Jerry Lagazo Sr., Gerard (Sylvia) Lagazo, Ronald (Wanda) Lagazo, Genaro (Shelly) Lagazo Jr., grandchildren Kimberly-Kanoe (Noel) Leonard, Amber Cabral, Ashley Lagazo, Vakeesha Lagazo, Liza (Jacob) Emproso, Troy (Anela) Lagazo, Tresame (Preston) Navarro, Nycol Kapu, Mychel Kapu, Tyresa Kapu, Anthony (Alexis) Lagazo, Johnathan (Krisya) Lagazo, Saydee Lagazo, Cody Lagazo, Logan Lagazo, Dion Lagazo, 22 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, brother Steven Manaday, sisters Felicidad Taguma, Maximina Carveiro, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
A service will be held on Saturday, Sept. 9, at the Hanapepe Salvation Army. Visitation is from 9 to 11 a.m. followed by service. The family request casual attire and welcomes flowers.

Melchora Cadabona Balisacan
Melchora Cadabona Balisacan, of ‘Ele‘ele, passed away at Garden Island Health Care on Aug. 26, 2023, at the age of 88. She was born on Jan. 5, 1935, in the Philippines, Ilocos Norte Baccara. She was a sugar plantation field worker.
She was preceded in death by her husband Romualdo Balisacan, daughters Nora Valera, Imelda Riopta, sisters Pia Visitacion and Flora Ramelb.
She is survived by son Roland (Cherie-Amore) Balisacan of ‘Ele‘ele, daughter Irene (Richard) Jardin of Tennessee, grandchildren Ricky, Nicole, Whitney, Alana, Dylan, Nanea, Raquel, Taylor, great-grandchildren Gavin, Teiva, PJ, Caleb, Nakoa, Leila, Kawehi, Nawai, Skylie, Kellan, numerous nieces and cousins.
A service is Sunday, Sept. 17, 2023, at the Garden Island Mortuary in Lawa‘i. Visitation is from 2 to 3 p.m. followed by service at 3 p.m. The family requests casual attire and welcomes flowers.

Carole C. Knutzen
Truly a loving and caring soul. Anahola was a home she appreciated daily, with her husband, Ernie, who was a pilot and flew the skies throughout the world and passed away before her. Carole was just 11 days short of being 90 years old upon her passing in her hometown of Marion, Illinois, on Aug. 23, 2023.
Carole leaves behind her four children Eric, Christian, Kathy and Kim. She will be dearly missed by them as well as ten grandchildren, one great- grandchild and another on the way!
We love you mamma Carole!
Rev. Leonard Shinryu Abeshima
The Rev. Leonard Shinryu Abeshima passed away at the age of 90, on Aug. 18, 2023, at his home in Lihu‘e. He was born on Jan. 3, 1933, in Waimea. He graduated from Waimea High School, the University of the Pacific and Koyasan University (Japan). He was a U.S. Army veteran and the resident minister of the Waimea Shingon Mission for over 50 years.
He was preceded in death by parents the Rev. Shinmyu and Masuno Abeshima, hanai parents the Rev. Kakuho and Aiko Asaoka, hanai brother Hiromichi Asaoka, and hanai sister Miyuki Kurisaki.
He is survived by wife Hiroko Abeshima of Lihu‘e, sons James (Susan) Abeshima of Mililani, O‘ahu, Henry (Kazumi) Abeshima of Aiea, O‘ahu, Gary (Je-Nell) Abeshima of Waipio, O‘ahu, daughter Ann (Rudy Domingo) Abeshima of Mililani, grandchildren Aleya, Riana, Jayson, Krysten, Ryllen, Rylee, Allyson, brother Frederick (Yasuko) Abeshima of Honolulu, sister-in-law Nancy Asaoka, and brother-in-law Roy Kurisaki.
Funeral services are Saturday, Sept. 9, at Garden Island Mortuary in Lawa‘i, with visitation from 2 to 4 p.m. and service at 4 p.m. Interment of ashes will be held at a later date.

Yvonne NaOmi Puanani Mae Elaban
Yvonne NaOmi Puanani Mae Elaban, better known as “Omi”, 68, passed away at home in Hanapepe on Aug. 17, 2023. She was born on O‘ahu on Aug. 24, 1954, and was the proprietor of Eat n Gitt food truck until retiring in 2020.
She was preceded in death by parents Clarence “Puka” and Mitsue Elaban and niece Danielle Elaban.
She is survived by partner Carla Dusenberry of Hanapepe, brothers Lee (Becky) Elaban, Guy Elaban both of Arizona and Cal (Jennifer) Elaban of Ohio, sister Kim (Rod) Neal of Arizona, extended Dusenberry ‘ohana: Sal and Dynamite Dusenberry-Lee and ‘ohana of Kalaheo, Garrick Dusenberry and ‘ohana of Hanapepe, Krim and Manu Dusenberry-Kenolio and ‘ohana, Shane ‘Aulani Dusenberry and ‘ohana both of Maui, Penny Dusenberry of Hanapepe, hanai parents Al and Pat Ho and ‘ohana of Lawa‘i, hanai sister Carrie Palama and ‘ohana of Kalaheo, best buddy Keith Pigao of Lawa‘i, and also leaving behind numerous nieces, nephews and ‘ohana from near and afar.
A celebration of her life is Saturday, Sept. 16, at Garden Island Mortuary, with visitation from 9 to 11 a.m. and remembrance from 11 to 11:45 a.m. The family requests casual attire and welcomes flowers.

Gerald Ellamar Sr., 78, of Kapa‘a, passed away on Aug. 25, 2023, at Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital. He was born in Lihu‘e, Kaua‘i, on Nov. 11, 1944 and was a cook at Higashi’s.
He was preceded in death by parents Federico and Angeline Ellamar, siblings Gabriel Ellamar, Donna Lopes, Andrew Ellamar, Faith Ellamar and Ted Ellamar.
Gerald is survived by wife Bonnie Alexa Ellamar, children Gerald (Stacy) Ellamar Jr., Rory (Casey) Ellamar, Alexine (Rory) Rayno, grandchildren James Ilae, Rylee Ellamar, Jace Ilae, Jared Ellamar, Hayden Ching, Jonah Rayno, Jase Ellamar, Jorey Ellamar, Dylan Rayno, Rielle Ellamar, siblings Richard Clarose, Gloria Robar, Fred Ellamar, Linda Murray, Lovina Steinlage, Anita Manakofua and Ron Ellamar.

Bernice Fernandez Wade, 83, of Kekaha, passed away on Aug. 15, 2023, in Waimea. She was born on May 8, 1940, in Waimea. She was an architectural draftsman and designer at AMFAC (American Factors) and the U.S. Navy Pacific Missile Range Facility at Barking Sands.
She was preceded in death by father Ralph Dominador Fernandez, mother Rosita Aperto Naumu, brothers Edward Fernandez, Henry Fernandez, sister Katherine Dilwith, daughter Doreen Cecilia Young and great-grandchild Hayven Young.
She is survived by grandchildren Lonnie Apelila Young (Cherrella Cronin), Justin Mark Young (Jamie Moulton), Colin Kalani, great-grandchildren Mikaela Kiarah Malulani Moulton-Young, Liliana Kolina U‘ilani Moulton-Young, Aubrey Katlin Kaleah Moulton-Young, Colin Kalani Young Jr., Star Lokilei Aloha Cecilia Young, Haeden Alexander Young, brothers Melvin Fernandez of Rhode Island, Daniel Fernandez of Kekaha, sister Jeanette (Jeannie) Pahota of Washington, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
A service is Friday, Sept. 8, at Garden Island Mortuary. Visitation for family is at 8:30 a.m. and friends at 9 a.m., eulogy at 10 a.m., and sharing at 10:30 a.m. Burial will follow at Kaua‘i Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home at 1:30 p.m.
