KAPA‘A — Mayor Derek S.K. Kawakami said on Thursday that the plaster needs time to cure properly at the county’s Louie “Smokey” Gonsalves Pool located oceanside near the Kapa‘a Neighborhood Center.
“Thank you for your patience,” Kawakami told the group of about three dozen people from the community, many being avid pool users. “The plaster needs time to cure. The pool will reopen to the public starting Sept. 7.”
Kawakami joined the county’s Department of Parks and Recreation, contractors and other community guests in blessing the renovation work that kept the pool shut for about a year.
Jade Wai‘ale‘ale Battad incorporated conservative cultural practices, such as the pa‘a kai, and the use of lei la‘i instead of maile to complete the renovation project that included new concrete, tilework and a new pump system that came with a $1.2 million price tag.
Design work was led by Jason Lau of Lintiaco Consulting Group. Pacific Concrete Coring and Cutting, represented by Vice President Julie Simonton, was the general contractor.
Subcontractors doing work on the pool included Randy Nishimura with Ron’s Electric and Loida Leventhol representing PICS LLC.
