Melchora Cadabona Balisacan
Melchora Cadabona Balisacan, of ‘Ele‘ele, passed away at Garden Island Health Care on Aug. 26, 2023 at the age of 88. She was born on Jan. 5, 1935 in Baccara, Ilocos Norte, Philippines. She was a sugar plantation field worker.
She was preceded in death by husband Romualdo Balisacan, daughters Nora Valera and Imelda Riopta and sisters Pia Visitacion and Flora Ramelb.
She is survived by son Roland (Cherie-Amore) Balisacan of ‘Ele‘ele, daughter Irene (Richard) Jardin of Tennessee, eight grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and cousins.
A service is Sunday, Sept. 17, at Garden Island Mortuary in Lawa‘i. Visitation is from 2 to 3 p.m. followed by service at 3 p.m. The family requests casual attire and welcomes flowers.
Garden Island Mortuary is assisting the family with arrangements.
Cheri Lynn Phillips
Cheri Lynn Phillips, 68, of Kapa‘a, passed away on Aug. 26, 2023. She was born in St. Louis, Missouri on Jan. 17, 1955, and was a massage therapist.
She was preceded in death by parents Dillard and Faye Phillips and sister Toni.
She is survived by numerous friends.

Rev. Leonard Shinryu Abeshima
The Rev. Leonard Shinryu Abeshima passed away at the age of 90 on Aug. 18, 2023, at his home in Lihu‘e. He was born on Jan. 3, 1933, in Waimea. He was a U.S. Army veteran and the resident minister of the Waimea Shingon Mission for over 50 years.
He was preceded in death by parents the Rev. Shinmyu and Masuno Abeshima, hanai parents the Rev. Kakuho and Aiko Asaoka, hanai brother Hiromichi Asaoka, and hanai sister Miyuki Kurisaki.
He is survived by wife Hiroko Abeshima of Lihu‘e, sons James (Susan) Abeshima of Mililani, O‘ahu, Henry (Kazumi) Abeshima of ‘Aiea, O‘ahu, and Gary (Je-Nell) Abeshima of Waipio, O‘ahu, daughter Ann (Rudy Domingo) Abeshima of Mililani, seven grandchildren, brother Frederick (Yasuko) Abeshima of Honolulu, a sister-in-law and a brother-in-law.
Funeral services are Saturday, Sept. 9, at Garden Island Mortuary in Lawa‘i, with visitation from 2 to 4 p.m. and service at 4 p.m. Internment of ashes will be held at a later date.

Henry Shizuo Ishida
Henry Shizuo Ishida, 91, passed away at home on May 12, 2023. He was born on July 3, 1931, served in the U.S. Marine Corps and retired from Tip Top Bakery.
He was preceded in passing by parents Sakugoro and Asayo Ishida, brothers Toshikazu Ishida, Yoshito Ishida and Thomas Ishida and sisters Masako Tamura and Sumie Garcia.
He is survived by wife Grace Ishida, son Randall Ishida, sister Shirley Ishida of Honolulu, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Private services have been held by the family. The family requests no koden (monetary gifts).
