Alice Sá Arruda
While Kaua‘i mourns, Heaven rejoices!
Alice Sá Arruda was born on May 10, 1927 in Hanama‘ulu, Kaua‘i, to John and Amelia Sá. Alice passed peacefully at her home in Lihu‘e surrounded by her loved ones on July 27, 2023 at the age of 96.
Preceded in death by the love of her life Henry Arruda, son Darryl Arruda, brother Vincent Sá and grandsons Darin and Kyle Arruda.
Alice is survived by her daughter Nadine (Darrell) Horner of Lihu‘e, son Kelly (Linda) Arruda of California, sister Patsy Lopes of Hanama‘ulu, sister-in-law Helen “Honey” Sá of California, numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews and her large extended hānai family.
Alice, being a devout Catholic, opened her heart and her home to many. She nurtured countless children that she raised as her own. She reveled in sharing the love of her Portuguese culture and traditions. She savored making Malassadas (Portuguese donuts), Bolinhos (Portuguese bread), Cebolas (Portuguese pickled onions) and Molho de Feijão (Portuguese Bean Soup). Her greatest delight was carrying on her mother’s tradition of making a generous meal for the entire extended family to be shared after Christmas Midnight Mass.
Alice’s greatest gift was her ability to love unconditionally, wholeheartedly, and make everyone feel loved and special.
A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, Sept. 2, 2023, at Immaculate Conception Church, with visitation from 8 to 9:30 a.m. and Mass celebrated at 10 a.m. Burial will follow at Kaua‘i Memorial Gardens.

Flora Elizabeth Leialoha Ornellas
Flora Elizabeth Leialoha Ornellas, 83, of Anahola, passed away in Lihu‘e on July 31, 2023. She was born in Lihu‘e on April 3, 1940, and was a homemaker.
She was preceded in passing by her husband of 52 years John Ornellas Jr., parents Stanley Manaia Sr. and Elizabeth Leialoha Oana, and siblings Stanely “Smokey” Oana Jr. and Eleanor “Leina” Carvalho.
She is survived by children Johnette (Patrick) Kinzie, Pualani Ornellas, Roland (Tida) Ornellas and Randal “Kaipo” Ornellas, brother Rossiter (Vicky) Oana, six grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.
Private services will be held by the family. However, they invite all friends and family to Kaua‘i Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home for the internment of both Flora and John Ornellas on Sept. 8, at noon.

Barbara Schumacher Bales
Barbara Schumacher Bales passed away at Wilcox Medical Center on July 29, 2023, at the age of 92. She was born in Lihu‘e on Feb. 22, 1931. She served as an elementary school teacher for 42 years and taught at the former Hanama‘ulu School and Elsie H. Wilcox Elementary School.
She was preceded in death by husband Edward Bales, parents Frederick and Jennie Schumacher, and sisters Jeanette (Thomas) Hines and Priscilla (Melvin) Alencastre.
She is survived by daughter Bonnie (Max) Ocariza, granddaughters Suzanne Ocariza and Shannon (Cheng-Hsin) Chang, and one great-grandson.
Friends may visit with the family on Saturday, Sept. 9, at Lihu‘e Lutheran Church, German Hill. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. with the service to follow at 10 a.m. Burial will be held immediately after the service at Lihu‘e Lutheran Church Cemetery.

Luciano Raguer Salvador
Luciano Raguer Salvador, 93, passed away at home on Aug. 15, 2023. He was born on Jan. 10, 1930, in the Philippines. He was an agriculturist.
He was preceded in death by father Julio Salvador and mother Catalina Raguer.
He is survived by wife Clarita Salvador, sons Carlo (Rheya), James (Liz) and Edgar (Catherine), sister Eliza (Florentino), grandsons Anthony, Christopher, Austin, Jared, Leonardo and Joseph, granddaughter Shyla, and numerous nephews and nieces.
A service is Thursday, Sept. 21 at St. Theresa Church in Kekaha. Visitation begins at 9 a.m., Mass at 10 a.m., and burial will follow at Kekaha Public Cemetery.

Rocky Kekai Kanahele
Rocky Kekai Kanahele passed away on Aug. 5, 2023 on Kaua‘i at the age of 28.
He was born on Oct. 10, 1994, in Honolulu.
He was preceded in death by father Malaki Kanahele, sister Mahina Powwell, grandpa Malaki (Alina) Kanahele and maternal grandparents Kaitinang (Kataba) Nantara.
He is survived by mother Santak Kanahele of Kekaha, brothers Lanikai Kanahele of ‘Ele‘ele and Clifton Kanahele of Waimea, sisters Laurie Pahulehua of Ni‘ihau, Diane Kanahele of Kekaha, Dilynn Kanahele of Kekaha and Stacey Kanahele of Kekaha, and numerous uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins.
A service is at Garden Island Mortuary on Saturday, Sept. 2. Visitation is from 9 a.m. to noon. The family requests casual attire and welcomes flowers.

Douglas Abran
Douglas Abran, 76, of Waimea, passed away at his residence on Aug. 8, 2023. He was born on July 31, 1947, in Haina, Hawai’i. He worked as a Liliko tractor operator and factory mechanic at the former Hamakua Sugar Company before moving to Kaua‘i, where he worked and retired from the Kaua‘i Lagoons Golf Course.
He was a veteran of the Vietnam War, serving with the 101st Airborne Division of the U.S. Army, receiving a Bronze Star Medal and an Army Commendation Medal for Heroism.
He was preceded in death by parents Attie Flores Abran and Pedro Abran, daughter Jaylan Abran, sister Rose Abran and brother Robert “Bobby” Abran Sr.
He is survived by son Dasan (Leimomi) Abran of Hilo, Hawai‘i Island, daughter Maelan (Bryant) Azevedo of Hilo, grandson Joshua Abran of Hilo, sisters Frances Alpiche of Honoka‘a, Hawai‘i Island, Suzanne Tamashiro of Honoka‘a, Virginia Kaneao of Waikoloa, Hawai‘i Island, Shirley Kirkwood of Illinois, Dolores Sharp of Washington and Attie (Randal) Millare of Kona, Hawai‘i Island, brother Ronald (Val) Abran of Kapulena, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
A service to honor his life on Kaua‘i will be held on Saturday, Sept. 9, at the Westside Christian Center Church in Kekaha. Visitation is from 10 to 11 a.m. with service to follow.
A celebration of life will be held on the Big Island of Hawai‘i on Saturday, Sept. 23, at the Honoka‘a United Methodist Church. Visitation is from 10 to 11 a.m. with service to follow.
