The Kaua‘i Police Department said it has initially identified the man, but DNA testing will be done in order to confirm his identity. Foul play is not a suspected factor in his death.
At approximately 5:15 a.m. on Monday, Kaua‘i Fire Department (KFD) firefighters were dispatched to a house fire on Kaumakani Avenue. Upon their arrival, they found a single-family dwelling fully engulfed in flames.
As firefighters gained control of the fire, they discovered a deceased male in one of the rooms. Once the fire was fully extinguished, the scene was turned over to police and fire inspectors with the KFD Fire Prevention Bureau for further investigation.
A preliminary investigation revealed that the man died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. An autopsy is pending, and the incident remains under investigation.
