LAHAINA, Hawai‘i — The death from the Lahaina Fire rose to 115 as of Monday evening, roughly two weeks after a wildfire ripped through the town on Maui.
The updated total comes as 100 percent of the single-story, residential properties have now been search in the disaster area.
“Search teams will now transition to searching multi-story residential and commercial properties,” the County of Maui said.
The Lahaina Fire remains 90 percent contained. An estimated 2,170 acres have burned. The Olinda Fire remains 85 percent contained. An estimated 1,081 acres have burned. The Kula Fire also remains 85 percent contained. An estimated 202 acres have burned. The Pulehu-Kihei Fire was declared 100 percent contained on Aug. 12.
“While the containment percentages have not changed significantly over the past several days, the Maui Fire Department wants to reassure public that there are no active threats at this time,” the County of Maui said. “The fires are not advancing, but full containment can be more difficult to establish and determine in urban settings.”
