KILAUEA — Jerry Swanson, 60, of Kapa‘a, was identified as the man who died following a traffic crash in Kilauea last week, the Kaua‘i Police Department said.
Shortly after 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 12, police department and Kaua‘i Fire Department personnel were dispatched to a report of a traffic crash involving a motor vehicle and motorcycle at the junction of Kuhio Highway and North Waiakalua Road.
According to a preliminary report, Swanson was operating a Harley Davidson motorcycle traveling northbound on Kuhio Highway when the motorcycle collided with a GMC truck attempting to turn left onto North Waiakalua Road. The truck was operated by a 33-year-old Kapa‘a man.
American Medical Response personnel pronounced Swanson dead at the scene. The man driving the truck was uninjured, the police department said.
Kuhio Highway near North Waiakalua Road was closed in both directions for approximately 2.5 hours while the police department’s Traffic Safety Section conducted an on-scene investigation.
Speed and alcohol do not appear to be factors in the crash at this time. However, the investigation remains ongoing, and toxicology reports are pending.
This is the second traffic-related fatality on Kaua‘i this year.
