LIHU‘E — Kaua‘i Diner on Rice Street stepped up for Maui wildfire victims.
Owners and employees were seen on the sidewalk outside the diner on Thursday afternoon, where they were holding signs urging people to stop to purchase $5 boba drinks, as well as spam musubi and bread pudding for $3.
Cherie Cabading and Yanny Jiang, the diner’s owners, said all proceeds from the event will go to the Hawaii Community Foundation’s Maui Strong Fund.
“We are changing up the price to make it a lot cheaper so that everyone can help us out,” said Cabading at the event, adding that they partnered with Kaua‘i ParTea located in Kukui Grove to sell the bubble tea.
“We’ve been seeing posts online about what’s happening in Lahaina, Maui. So we thought we tried to figure out ways to kind of donate funds to the Maui strong or Maui community. And this is one way for us to kind of help out Maui,” she said.
Cabading and Jiang are aiming to raise $3,000 for the Maui Strong Fund during the one-day event, which ran from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Thursday.
“If we don’t reach that goal, we will match it and still donate to Hawaii Community Foundation,” she said.
The duo officially opened the Kaua‘i Diner on July 22, and they say they are planning other events and promotions to support those impacted by the wildfires on Maui.
I don’t own a business. But raising funds for Maui? No way. In this tough economic times you’ve got to keep everything and funnel everything into the business. Donating or helping out someone else is just too out of touch with business. Bankruptcy is what this spells like if you continue.
