NAWILIWILI HARBOR — Bonjolea II won the Nawiliwili Yacht Club Short Series Race No. 2 due to errors by two of the three boats racing at Nawiliwili Harbor on Aug. 10.
“The Short Series Race No. 2 was very unusual,” said Chris Jordan aboard OZone. “There were five laps, the most we have ever done. There were also two new courses, with the ‘F course’ going around the Kalapaki buoy and then G-7, while the ‘course H’ went around the Kalapaki buoy and G-9.”
Racing under a 13-knot wind blowing out of the north-northeast, the five laps covered 4.88 miles.
“The start determined the entire race,” Jordan said. “There were only three boats racing, and they all started on port tack by the Race Committee. OZone and Weatherly were called ‘over early,’ and Bonjolea II took off on their merry way.”
OZone reacted to the “over early” call about 25 seconds into the race and turned to restart.
“Weatherly, unfortunately, realized the situation and turned around after 52 seconds,” Jordan said. “And that was essentially the race, as we played follow-the-leader around the race course.”
Bonjolea II held on to its lead off the start line and sounded the finish horn on an elapsed time of 59 minutes, 13 seconds, followed by OZone sounding the horn at 1:07:31 and Weatherly in 1:09:57.
Bonjolea II corrected to 1:02:47 PHRF for its second straight win in the series, followed by OZone correcting to 1:07:37 PHRF and Weatherly finishing at 1:10:03 PHRF.
The next race in the Short Series takes place on Thursday, when the first flags fly sat 5 p.m. at the Nawiliwili jetty parking area.
