HONOLULU — Working under first-year coach Mel Purcell, the Kaua‘i High School Red Raiders were able to score in the first and last quarters during its nonleague outing against Pearl City High School on Saturday night in a live-streamed football contest on O‘ahu.
However, the Red Raiders came up way short, 42-14.
According to numbers from ScoringLive.com, Red Raiders quarterback Racen Pegeder threw for 52 yards and a touchdown. Those numbers paled in comparison to Pearl City’s Trey Dascoscos, who finished the night with 244 passing yards and four of the team’s six touchdown.
Kaua‘i High receiver Kyzen Bisarra was credited with pulling in a TD strike and 36 yards on pass plays.
Kaua‘i High also had Malu Davis leading the ground game with 19 rushing yards on nine carries, compared with Pearl City’s Shaedyn Quemado leading the night with 72 yards on a dozen pushes. Kaua‘i High’s Kaimana Inouye helped the effort with 18 yards on a single carry, while Pegeder added six yards on 11 rushing attempts.
The Red Raiders closed the book in spectacular style, when Kaimana Kaui scored the team’s final touchdown on an 84-yard kickoff return.
Kaua‘i High next hosts Viewpoint of California in a varsity contest on Friday. Kickoff is at 4 p.m. at Vidinha Stadium in Lihu‘e.
The Red Raiders are also scheduled to host Damien High School in a varsity contest on Aug. 25 at Vidinha Stadium. Kickoff is at 4 p.m.
Other preseason contests will have Kapa‘a hosting St. Louis II in a single varsity only matchup on Saturday at the Bryan J. Baptiste Sports Complex in Kapa‘a. Kickoff is at 1 p.m.
Waimea High School will host Buckeye Union in a varsity contest on Aug. 26 at Hanapepe Stadium. Kickoff is at 6 p.m.
The Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation launches its football regular season on Sept. 2, when Kaua‘i High visits Kapa‘a at the Bryan J. Baptiste Sports Complex. The junior varsity contest kicks off at 4 p.m. The varsity contest starts 30 minutes after the JV game.
