“As firefighting efforts continue, 17 additional fatalities have been confirmed today amid the active Lahaina fire. This brings the death toll to 53 people,” the county said in a Facebook post.
A total of 36 fatalities were confimed as of Wednesday, Aug. 9.
The Lahaina Fire was 80 percent contained as of Thursday morning, county officials said.
No other details were available, but Gov. Josh Green told CNN on Thursday morning that he expects the death toll to go up “significantly.”
