PUHI — Kaua‘i Community College (KCC) will offer its Express Enrollment Night for students interested in enrolling for the fall semester Trades Program.
The Express Enrollment Night will be held on Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the KCC Learning Resource Center. It will include KCC staff from its admissions, financial aid, academic advising and counseling and career center offices.
Additionally, the college’s Hale Malama CARES team that recently received a gift of period products from the Zonta Club of Kaua‘i will also be available.
KCC offers its recent graduates and community members a final opportunity to enroll in some of the popular trade programs that include automotive technology, carpentry, welding and electronics technology.
“The diversity of trades classes at the Kaua‘i Community College allowed me an opportunity to realize that I could make good money performing these types of services,” a recent KCC graduate said. “I learned carpentry, electrical work, plumbing, air conditioning, and refrigeration and soon got a job that made $45 an hour.”
KCC Automotive Technology Professor Gordon Talbo said there is a high demand for students coming out of the automotive technology program.
“Currently, we have a 100 percent work placement for students leaving this program,” Talbo said. “We are currently the only University of Hawai‘i Community College automotive program that teaches the automotive green technology certificate for electric vehicles. We cluster the courses in different types of certificates in how they align directly with the workforce.”
Talbo said KCC provides about 30 percent of certified employees who go on to work at the Pacific Missile Range Facility (PMRF) from the college’s Electronics Technology trade program. He said the KCC has been working on a partnership between KCC, PMRF, and Waimea High School that will allow Waimea High School students interested in working at PMRF within the electronics technology field to tour the base and start taking KCC electronics courses while still enrolled in high school.
The KCC Trades Program also offers internship opportunities, the Ka‘ika‘i Program, and assist in job placement to support students as they transition to the workforce. The internships provide students with first-hand work experience in the field they are actively pursuing while building confidence and enhancing their skills through practical learning.
The fall semester starts on Aug. 17 when payments are due. The first day of instruction is Aug. 21 with Aug. 29 being the final day to add semester courses.
