Alice Sá Arruda
While Kaua‘i mourns; Heaven rejoices!
Alice Sá Arruda was born on May 10, 1927 in Hanamä‘ulu, Kaua‘i to John and Amelia Sá. Alice passed peacefully at her home in Lïhu’e surrounded by her loved ones on July 27, 2023 at the age of 96.
Preceded in death by the love of her life Henry Arruda, son Darryl Arruda, brother Vincent Sá and grandsons Darin and Kyle Arruda.
Alice is survived by her daughter Nadine (Darrell) Horner of Lïhu‘e, son Kelly (Linda) Arruda of California, sister Patsy Lopes of Hanamä‘ulu, sister-in-law Helen “Honey” Sá of California, numerous grandchildren, great- grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces and nephews and her large extended hänai family.
Alice, being a devout Catholic, opened her heart and her home to many. She nurtured countless children that she raised as her own. She reveled in sharing the love of her Portuguese culture and traditions. She savored making Malassadas (Portuguese donuts), Bolinhos (Portuguese bread), Cebolas (Portuguese pickled onions) and Molho de Feijão (Portuguese Bean Soup). Her greatest delight was carrying on her mother’s tradition of making a generous meal for the entire extended family to be shared after Christmas Midnight Mass.
Alice’s greatest gift was her ability to love unconditionally, wholeheartedly and make everyone feel loved and special.
A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, Sept. 2, 2023, at Immaculate Conception Church with visitation from 8 to 9:30 a.m. and Mass celebrated at 10 a.m. Burial will follow at Kaua‘i Memorial Gardens.
Kaua‘i Memorial Gardens and Funeral Home assisted the Arruda family with arrangements.
Carole Porfiria Nacion
Carole Porfiria Nacion, of ‘Ele‘ele, passed away peacefully at her home on July 12, 2023, at the age of 92. She was born on Nov. 4, 1930, in Lihu‘e. Throughout her life she worked as a radio announcer for KUAI radio, PBX operator and HR secretary for Sheraton Kaua‘i Resort, island representative for Local 5 Union, HR director for Sheraton Coconut Beach Hotel and retired as a secretary for Holy Cross Church in Kalaheo.
She was preceded in death by parents Jose and Victoria Tabuso, sister Remy Ramos, brothers Sonny and Jose Tabuso, and husband Nicolas Nacion Sr.
She is survived by son Nicolas Nacion Jr., daughters Vicki (Ken Sato) Valenciano, Ester Jayne (Eddie Iloreta) Brown, Shandra Jei Macatee, grandsons Robert (Brandy) Chang, Anthony (Marisa) Chang, Cole (Ryan) Valenciano, Maluhia Castillo, granddaughter Shaina Nacion and three great-grandsons.
Friends may visit the family on Saturday, Aug. 5, at Holy Cross Church in Kalaheo. Visitation begins at 8:30 a.m. and Mass is celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Burial will follow at Kaua‘i Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home.
Noboru Yamane
Noboru Yamane, 98, of Kapa‘a, passed away on July 3, 2023. He was born on April 5, 1925. He was a U.S. Army veteran and retired from Hawaiian Airlines as the regional manager for neighbor islands.
He was preceded in death by wife Betsy Tsuyuko (Fukuda) Yamane, son Lorin Yamane, daughter Amy Yamane, parents Kanekichi and Uzume Yamane, siblings Helen Lizama, Mary (Makimoto) Sato and Susumu Yamane.
He is survived by son Michael (Valerie) Yamane, grandsons Derek Yamane, Shawn Yamane, numerous nieces and nephews.
A private service was held. The family requests no koden (monetary gifts).
The family would like to thank the nurses and staff of Garden Isle Rehabilitation and Healthcare and Kaua‘i Hospice.
Garden Island Mortuary and the Kaua‘i Office of Veterans’ Services assisted the family with arrangements.
Felix Viernes Erorita Sr.
Felix Viernes Erorita Sr. passed away on June 13, 2023, in the Philippines at the age 70. He was born on Oct. 20, 1952, in the Philippines. He was a bus driver.
He was preceded in death by wife Nelia Erorita, parents Lijardo and Rosalia Erorita and son Felijar Erorita.
He is survived by sons Felix (Marygene) Erorita Jr., Neleo (Shallee) Erorita, Richjoy (Monica) Erorita, daughter Rose (Eddie) Motilla, sisters Remedios (Eduardo) Gudoy, Gloria Suniga, brothers Edison Erorita, Regoberto (Yolanda) Erorita, Ricarte Erorita, 11 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
A service is Saturday, Aug. 12, at Aloha Church Kaua‘i in Lihu‘e. Visitation begins at 9 a.m., service at 10 a.m., and burial will follow at Kalapaki Bay Memorial at 12 p.m.

Neil Manguchei
Neil Manguchei, 74, of Kapa‘a, passed away on Saturday, July 15, 2023. He was born to John and Margaret Manguchei on July 6, 1949, at Wilcox Memorial Hospital. He worked most of his life as a bartender, but most recently worked as a truck driver and courier before retiring.
He is survived by children Cheris (Nardo) Manguchei-Nacnac, Neilson (Kele) Manguchei, Nathan (Tina) Manguchei, grandchildren Tianne Manguchei, Ashlie Manguchei, Mason Nacnac, Chael Manguchei, Nathaneil Manguchei, great-granddaughter Lily Garma, step-granddaughter Lenele Rodrigues, hanai granddaughter Alena Keohokapu, sister Joanne (James) Manguchei, brothers Kenneth (Ilima) Manguchei, David Manguchei, and companion Lara Sadora.
Please join the Manguchei family for a celebration of life on Saturday, Aug. 5, 2023, at Lydgate Park, beachside below the soccer fields. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. followed by heavy pupu and soft drinks.

Peter Paul ‘Rip’ Rayno
Peter Paul “Rip” Rayno, 83, passed away at his home in Lihu‘e, on July 18, 2023. He was born on Kaua‘i on Nov. 1, and was raised in Hanama‘ulu.
He was preceded in death by parents Peter and Beatrice Rayno, daughter, Roxi Makena and brother James “Cashim” Amorin.
Peter is survived by daughter Joy (Kerry) Nuivo of Lihu‘e, grandchildren Brad “Pekelo” (Tara) Dettloff of O‘ahu, Ryndie “Luana” (Gabriel) Sarsona of Idaho, Lyle “Kilika” (Jennie) Dettloff of Washington, Angela “Kashmir” Cleveland Makena Rayno, Kolton “Makana” Medeiros, Chanler “Aikane” Medeiros all of Lihu‘e, brother Gene (Marilyn “Tootsie”) Rayno of Lihu‘e, sister Matilda “Matty” (Amorin) Baldovino of Washington, sister-in-law Maggie Amorin of Hanama‘ulu, and five great-grandchildren.
He attended Hanama‘ulu School and graduated from Kaua‘i High School in 1958. He was an athlete, coached multiple sports including baseball, softball, basketball and football, and was a referee. He worked for the Lihu‘e Plantation Company until its closure, Kaua‘i Surf and Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle School up until the end of the 2022-2023 school year. He volunteered much of his time for the Kaua‘i community.
Funeral services are at Immaculate Conception Church on Friday, Aug. 18. Visitation begins at 9 a.m., Mass at 10 a.m., and burial will follow at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Cemetery.
