Arthur K. Pia
Arthur K. Pia, 75, passed away on June 16, 2023, on O‘ahu. He was born on July 7, 1947, on Kaua‘i.
He was preceded in death by parents Miriam and John Pia, sisters Madeline K. (Benny) Raymond, Lily K. (Charles) Kiilau and brothers Joseph K. (Sherry) Pia and George P. (Louise) Pia.
He is survived by sons Russell Pia, Arthur Pia Jr., daughter Ginny Pia, grandchildren Kaelani Pia, Ty Scribner, sister Ruby (Gary) Cummings, brothers John Pia, Hiram (Karen) Pia, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
A celebration of life is Saturday, July 22, at Niumalu Canoe Club building at Kalapaki beach starting at 10 a.m. The family requests casual attire.
Derek Akira Wasano
Derek Akira Wasano, of Lihu‘e, passed away on May 27, 2023 in Lihu‘e. He was born on Aug. 17, 1971 in Lihu‘e. He was a truck driver.
He was preceded in death by father Dennis Isao Wasano.
He is survived by son Dylan Wasano of Puhi, mother Mary Wasano of California, brother Gregg (Julie) Zieman of Massachusetts, sisters Melissa Wasano of Kapa‘a, Marnie Wasano of California, nephews Isaiah Tomacder of California, Lawakua Brown of Kapa‘a, nieces Zia and Zoe Zieman of Massachusetts, girlfriend Leiko Shimazu, numerous uncles, aunts and cousins.
A service is Saturday, Aug. 5, at Garden Island Mortuary in Lawai. Visitation begins at 9 a.m. and a celebration of life to follow at 10 a.m.
Derek’s ashes will be united with his father and grandparents at a later date. Following the service, there will be a convoy. Everyone is welcome to join. The family suggests casual attire and requests no flowers.

Rodney Uwane Sonoda
Rodney Uwane Sonoda, 75, passed away on July 10, 2023. He was born on Aug. 4, 1947, in Honolulu. He later moved to Kaua‘i and was the proprietor of Wai‘ale‘ale Discus.
Rodney is survived by his wife Candy Sonoda, daughter Trina (Brett) Sonoda-Soboleski, granddaughter Tawni Sonoda, and many family and friends.
Rodney loved the beauty of Kaua‘i and enjoyed hiking. He had many hobbies and activities including riding his motorcycle, horseback riding, fishing, and astronomy. He will be remembered for his kind compassionate nature and his positive outlook on life. Rodney will be greatly missed by his family and numerous friends.
Private services will be held by the family.
Kaua‘i Memorial Gardens assisted the family with arrangements.
Barbara Jean Kuulani Leota
Barbara Jean Kuulani Leota, 82, of Anahola, passed away on March 14, 2023, at her residence. She was born on April 5, 1940, on O‘ahu. She was a housekeeping manager at Pono Kai Resort.
She was preceded in death by parents Louis Mahelona Jr., Rosella Mahelona, husband Peter Leota, son Peter Leota, brothers Ronald Mahelona, Stephen Mahelona, Alan Mahelona, John Mahelona, Charles Mahelona, sisters Gwendolyn Bargamento, Vivian Almeida, brothers-in-law Glenn Bargamento, Jerry Almeida, sisters-in-law Sue Mahelona and Karen Mahelona.
She is survived by sons John Leota (Jan), Richard Leota (Verna), daughter Lea Myers (Steve), grandchildren Kainoa Leota, KT Leota-Khuong (Andrew), Nicholas Leota (Dana), Keoni Leota (Anthony), Jantill Leota, Lealani Svobodova, William Soza (Michelle), Natasha Leota-Shalawylo (Thomas), hanai grandchildren Daniel Joao, Shawn Myers, Brandon Borrero, numerous great-grandchildren, nephews and nieces.
A celebration of life and scattering of ashes with family and friends is at Anahola Beach (Pilars side) on Sunday, July 23, 2023, starting at 11 a.m.
Rudy Madrid Fernandez
Rudy Madrid Fernandez, of Kapa‘a, passed away on June 23, 2023, at Wilcox Medical Center at the age of 55. He was born on Nov. 22, 1967, in Ilocos Norte, Philippines. He was a gardener/labor.
He was preceded in death by parents Francisco Y. Fernandez, Rosalina M. Fernandez and brother Enrique M. Fernandez.
He is survived by wife Maida Fernandez, sons Ray Rex Labrador of O‘ahu, Jhevin Salvador-Fernandez of O‘ahu, Roy John (Zamira) Fernandez of O‘ahu, daughters Chellcy (Crystal) Koerte-Fernandez of Kaua‘i, Danielle (Demarco) Morris of Ohio, Deonna Guy-Fernandez of Ohio, Sharmin Fernandez of Washington, nine grandchildren, brothers Irineo (Rosita) Fernandez, Reynaldo (Lena) Fernandez, Rolly (Betty) Fernandez, Rely (Janet) Fernandez, sisters Gabriella (Ludovico) Ramiscal, Erlinda Sagucio, Glory (Gerardo) Aceret, Yolanda (Julius) Corpuz, Lydia (Nelson) Villanueva, Marlyn Stoner, numerous uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins.
