Annette Hashimoto (she said the kalo agemono at the Kapa‘a Hongwanji bon dance was really good) said on Saturday that there were women-made crafters at Kapa‘a Beach Park.
But we had women-made crafters like Hashimoto, Julie Demond of Jules from the ‘Aina, and Laura Kawailehua Wolfgang of Na Hula Arts, and more at the King’s Parade and Ho‘olaule‘a on the lawn of the Historic County Building, where there was a lot more shade to enjoy the trade winds.
Kudos, Lyah Kama Drake and the King Kamehameha Celebration Commission Kaua‘i members on a great effort to welcome back the in-person festivities not experienced since 2018!
More kudos to Kumu Hula Troy Allen Hinano Lazaro and Halau Ka Pa Hula O Hinano, who got to accompany Pa‘u Queen Shelly Kaui Carvalho along with Mark Tanaka and all those Kaua‘i Realty professionals.
More kudos to Kumu Hula Kapu Kinimaka-Alquiza and Na Hula O Kaohikukapulani and Tiffany Dodge and her Aloha Dance Studio (she’s got a big recital coming up on Saturday at the Kaua‘i War Memorial Convention Hall in Lihu‘e) ‘ohana on bringing dance to Kukui Grove Center in Lihu‘e, where Harvey Maeda and the Kaua‘i Classic Cars (they were in the King’s Parade, too!) will bring back the 18th Dad’s Day Car Show on Saturday.
Laurie Ho and the Kaua‘i County Farm Bureau are paying tribute to past Kaua‘i farm fairs on Saturday and Sunday with a two-day Kaua‘i Agricultural Festival at Vidinha Stadium’s adjacent soccer fields in Lihu‘e (we need to have Scotty Vidinha tell people how to eat those Big Save pineapples).
And Gordon Higa said even if he moved, he’s still looking at doing the Nawiliwili Yacht Club Father’s Day Fishing Derby (does Jim Saylor still have that cool fish hat?), where keiki fishers get all kinds of prizes courtesy of the generosity of lots of community sponsors and the cost of registration is far less than the lunch that keiki fishers get.
