LIHU‘E — Cash, or rice? And yes, the Safeway store at Kaua‘i Village is undergoing renovation work, but is still participating in the Summer Rice Drive with the Safeway store in the Hokulei Shopping Center.
Safeway launched the drive on Friday with volunteers from the Hawai‘i Foodbank Kaua‘i manning tables soliciting monetary contributions to the drive at the Safeway store to benefit the Hawai‘i Foodbank Kaua‘i.
“We prefer the rice,” said Michelle Panoke of the Hawai‘i Foodbank Kaua‘i. “But anything people contribute helps feed people on the island.”
Lesah Merritt, the store manager at Safeway Hokulei Village, said the overall goal is to raise eight pallets of rice, or around 950 specially priced 20-pound bags of rice before the day’s end on Sunday.
She said during a previous rice drive, the two stores combined raised more than 10 pallets of rice.
“But the rice prices have gone up,” Merritt said. “Anything helps.”
“This campaign comes at a perfect time to help those families who need the supplement support, especially while school is out,” said Tisha Remigio of the Hawai‘i Foodbank.
Contributors can help by visiting either the Safeway in Lihu‘e or Waipouli to make their contributions.
