LIHU‘E — The county Department of Public Works Solid Waste Division announced the winners of the April Electronic Waste, or eWaste, contest, on Friday, May 19, 2023, with the 10 winners receiving gift cards of $400 each from Walmart, Times Supermarkets, Target, Safeway and Costco.
LIHU‘E — The county Department of Public Works Solid Waste Division announced the winners of the April Electronic Waste, or eWaste, contest, on Friday, May 19, 2023, with the 10 winners receiving gift cards of $400 each from Walmart, Times Supermarkets, Target, Safeway and Costco.
‘Ele‘ele School led the list with seven winners getting gift cards: Ethan Irimata, Brady Miguel, Aari Andres, Tiffanie Albano, Kenzo Ibara, Tayah Fuji and Jeila Valdez.
Rhailey Gayagas, a student at the Kapa‘a Elementary School, earned a gift card, along with King Kaumuali‘i Elementary School student Aileia Cassler.
Malie Miyazaki was the sole high school winner, hailing from Kaua‘i High School.
All of the students were congratulated for their efforts that keep eWaste from ending in the landfill by Keola Aki, the county’s recycling program coordinator.
During the contest, students from across the island were tasked with turning in eWaste to Resource Recovery Solutions that operates the Puhi Metals Recycling Facility.
Resource Recovery Solutions reported about 30 students took advantage of the collection effort.
The contest was funded by a state Department of Health grant awarded to the county to promote eWaste recycling on Kaua‘i through the state’s eWaste Recycling Law, which mandates that electronic manufacturers provide funding to recycle eWaste within the state.
