LIHU‘E — Reylynn McClellan-Smith found the net twice on Saturday to lead the Rush Kaua‘i under 11 age group girls squad to a 6-2 win over Braveheart FC Hearts under 12 girls for the U12 girls title at the north Vidinha Stadium soccer fields that bristled with excitement under humid, sunny conditions.
Others scoring for scrappy Rush Kaua‘i included Kaisa Akau, Liliana Dela Cruz, Gemma Kirkcaldie and Kaley Yamada.
Braveheart had goals from Sophie Cornell and Anaualeikupuna Vaughan to prevent a shutout.
This was just one game in a day filled with playoffs and championships for the Kaua‘i Soccer Association spring season that saw 690 students playing for 56 different teams ranging from 8 (years) and under through 16 and under.
“This is the biggest season ever,” said Coach Kevin Gusman, who turned out to help Kevin Devitt at the KSA officials’ tent. “We’ve got several overtime games, and there were some upset games. It’s exciting.”
KSA will take a break from regular games during the summer, leaving spectators to talk about several teams that will be going off island to participate in various soccer tournaments.
KSA will open its fall season when school gets back in session following the summer break.
