WAILUA — The stretch of highway in front of the blighted Coco Palms Resort will see continued road work next week, as a plan to create a fourth lane nears completion.
State Department of Transportation spokesman Jai Cunningham said the project will “provide additional capacity to Kuhio Highway to help relieve congestion.”
The project is expected to be finished by late June or early July.
“The paving work is nearly complete, and the contractor is conducting remedial work in areas where the pavement does not meet our contract specifications,” Cunningham said.
The area between Kuamo‘o Road and Kapa‘a Bypass may experience nightly two-lane closures, May 14 through May 19, from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m., due to the project.
Other lane closures planned for the week include the following:
Princeville
• A single lane closure on Kuhio Highway (Route 56) is possible in either direction for guardrail installation and maintenance between mile marker 0 and 2.6, in the vicinity of Princeville Center and Aku Road, May 15 through May 19, from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
• A single right lane closure on Kuhio Highway (Route 56) is possible in either direction for grass cutting between mile marker 0.5 and 1.2, in the vicinity of Halalei Plantation Road and Ohiki Road, May 15 through May 19, from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
Kilauea
• A single-lane closure on Kuhio Highway (Route 56) is possible in either direction for routine bridge inspection between mile marker 25 and 25.1, in the vicinity of Kalihiwai Bridge, May 17, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Wailua
• A right shoulder closure and narrowed lanes of Kuhio Highway (Route 56) are possible in the southbound direction between mile markers 5.7 and 6.7, in the vicinity of Leho Drive and Kapa‘a Bypass, for the Kuhio Highway Short-Term Improvements.
• A single-lane closure on Kuhio Highway (Route 56) is possible in either direction for guardrail and drainage installation and striping between mile marker 5.9 and 6.6, in the vicinity of Kuamo‘o Road and Kapa‘a Bypass, May 15 through May 19, from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Lihu‘e
• A right lane closure on Kaumuali‘i Highway (Route 50) is possible in the westbound direction for tree trimming between mile marker 3 and 4, in the vicinity of Pu‘unana Road and Kipu Road, May 15 through May 19, from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
• A shoulder closure on Kaumuali‘i Highway (Route 50) is possible in either direction for surveying work between mile markers 0 and 2.5, in the vicinity of Rice Street, May 15 through May 19, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
• A shoulder closure on Wa‘apa Road/Kapule Highway (Route 51) is possible in either direction for surveying work between mile markers 0 and 2, in the vicinity of Kailikea Street and Ahukini Road, May 15 and May 19, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
• A shoulder closure on Kuhio Highway (Route 56) is possible in either direction between mile markers 0 and 3, in the vicinity of Rice Street and Kaua‘i Beach Drive, on May 15 and May 19, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. for surveying work.

Koloa
• Portions of Weliweli Road will be closed for road resurfacing from May 15 to May 19 from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
• A right lane closure on Kaumuali‘i Highway (Route 50) is possible in the westbound direction between mile marker 8.1 and 8.3, in the vicinity of Omao stream bridge, on May 16 and May 17 from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. for tree trimming.
Hanapepe
• A single right lane closure on Kaumuali‘i Highway (Route 50) is possible in either direction for crosswalk restriping between mile marker 9.5 to 17, in the vicinity of Lele Road and Uha Road, from May 15 through May 19, from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
Kalaheo
• A single right lane closure on Kaumuali‘i Highway (Route 50) is possible in either direction for tree trimming between mile marker 13 to 13.5, in the vicinity of Wahiawa Stream Bridge, on May 15 from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
