WAILUA — After taking the lead of the David Ishii Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association Girls Golf Championships on Tuesday with a 3-under 69, Punahou senior Raya Nakao fired a 2-under 70 during the final round on Wednesday to clinch the individualist spot with a 5-under 139 at Wailua Golf Course.
Ava Cepeda of Kahuku High School outgunned Nakao on the final 18 holes of play to finish with a 3-under 69, the best round of the day. That second-day boost helped her to a 2-under 142 following 36 holes of play, good enough for three strokes below Nakao’s second consecutive HHSAA win at 142.
Heiley Kikuchi, who led the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation following the first 18 holes, finished Wednesday by improving eight strokes. She led the KIF girls with a two-day 172 (90-82) for 29th place overall.
Kalani High School as a team finished Wednesday play just two strokes ahead of Mililani High School to capture top team honors with a two-day total of 455 (229-226).
Mililani High School finished by tying with Punahou School for second-place team honors, both teams ended with 458. Fourth place went to ‘Iolani School, which ended with a two-day total of 479.
Kaua‘i High School girls, shaving 21 strokes in the second day of the tournament, improved to a ninth-place finish (289-268—557).
The boys will tee off starting at 7 a.m. on Thursday and Friday at Wailua Golf Course for their championship play in the David Ishii HHSAA Boys Golf Championships.
