Mahalo, Noelani Pomroy, for getting lei to all those people (both the Royal Sonesta kaua‘i Resort Lihu‘e and the Kaua‘i Marriott!) so they could be appropriately garbed on May Day is Lei Day (Elvrine Chow had a bag with the phrase emblazoned on it).

Kudos, Chucky Boy Chock, Paul and Noelani Pomroy, and all those Kaua‘i Family and Community Education volunteers, and many, many others, for perpetuating the popular lei contest.
Laurie Ho said Kaua‘i Museum volunteer Kay Nakata is the mom of Steve Nakata of the Kaua‘i Community College culinary department’s mom] is a KFCA member.
There’s a special Keiki La Lei contest taking place on Saturday at the Kaua‘i Museum courtyard in Lihu‘e that honors the lei-making of Kats and Happy Tamanaha. Check out kauaimuseum.org for more details.
Kudos, too, to all those other places like the Grand Hyatt Kaua‘i Resort &Spa in Po‘ipu, Waimea High School, Kapa‘a High School, and the many untold places where May Day was celebrated. The first Honolulu City and County event was back in 1927, and Don Blanding, a poet from Oklahoma, talked with Honolulu Star-Bulletin columnist Grace Tower Warren about “May Day is Lei Day”(in Hawai‘i). Ruth and Leonard “Red” Hawk wrote the song that is still being sung by entertainers today.
OK, time to go one better: Saturday is the annual Hawai‘i Lodging &Tourism Association Kaua‘i Chapter Visitor Industry Charity Walk that starts and ends at Vidinha Stadium in Lihu‘e, starting at 6 a.m. There’s still time to register for a slippah in the Hawai‘iUSA Federal Credit Union Slippah Drop for prizes or, better yet, register for one of those unique walk shirts by visiting www.charitywalkhawaii.org.
