KAPA‘A — One of the Kaua‘i Senior Softball games — between the Keonimana Gents and the Rookies — was canceled due to overnight rains at the Mayor Bryan J. Baptiste Sports Complex on Saturday.
“Unfortunately, we had to cancel the Gents/Rookies game at the Bryan J. Baptiste field due to the overnight rain, and additionally, the 70s division had to miss another Friday due to a wet field,” said J.C. Crouch, the Kaua‘i Senior Softball League vice president.
“However, I want to recognize the extraordinary effort put out by a number of our guys to get the field in shape and allow us to get three big games in at the Baptiste field.”
Crouch said Sia Salausa of the Gents went out early and found puddles at first base, second base and home plate. The infield was only partially dry, and the fence was still up from the girls’ softball game played the night before.
“We were ready to cancel the rest of the games when Wes Kaui showed up with his rakes and a blower. Wes insisted he would get the field ready by the second game (scheduled to start at 10:30 a.m.),” Crouch said.
“The Rookies (Nelson Chiba and Aaron Uyeda) and the Gents (Salause, Kaui, Billy Correa and Galen Shigeta), whose game was canceled, jumped in with Jeff (Kimoto) of the Lihu‘e A’s to drag, rake, shovel the infield, and taking down the girls’ fence in record time.
“Greg from Solid Steel sump-pumped the remaining puddles and we could play ball. Please note that the Rookies and Gents were canceled by then, but they still insisted on helping and making the rest of the games happen. Sincere thanks to everyone.”
Kaua‘i Senior Softball continues Friday with the 70s division contests, weather permitting, at Isenberg Park in Lihu‘e on Friday, and the 60s division games at the Wailua and Kapa‘a (Bryan J. Baptiste Sports Complex), Saturday. The first pitch for the 60’s division goes off at 9 a.m. The 60’s games are 9:30 and 10:30 a.m., at Isenberg Park.
