Chad Timothy Alayvilla
Chad Timothy Alayvilla passed away in Las Vegas on Feb. 12, 2023, at the age of 45. He was born on July 29, 1977, in Lihu‘e. He worked in surveillance at the Red Rock Hotel in Las Vegas.
He is survived by wife Staci Alayvilla, daughter Aubree Kenney-Alayvilla, parents Domi and Carol (Cataluna) Alayvilla, brother Lance Alayvilla, one niece, one nephew, one grand-niece, and numerous aunties, uncles and cousins.
He was preceded in death by grandparents Rufino and Juliana Alayvilla and Augustine (Jiggs) and Dorothy (Dora) Cataluna.
A service is at Immaculate Conception Church in Kapaia on Saturday, April 29. Visitation with the family will be from 8 to 10 a.m. and Mass to follow. A scattering of ashes will be private. The family requests no flowers.

James ‘Kimo’ Gerardo
James “Kimo” Gerardo, 68, passed away peacefully at his Hanama‘ulu home on Feb. 4, 2023. He was born Sept. 17, 1954, in Lihu‘e, and retired from Duke’s restaurant.
He was preceded in passing by parents James Gerardo and Mary Keoho Haluapo Gerardo, sisters Marylyn Gerardo and Kathy Louis and brother Alan Gerardo.
He is survived by son Byron Gerardo, sisters Joyce (Terry) Daligdig, Alison (Clayton) Silva and Brenda (Rey) Coloma, brothers Brian (Shanell) Gerardo, Jerry Aquias and Mathew Louis, and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, uncles and aunties.
A celebration of life is Saturday, April 29, at the Peter Rayno Sr. Park in Hanama‘ulu, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Ikona Ivan Fernandez
October 14, 1999 – March 30, 2023
Ikona Ivan Fernandez was born at the Wilcox Memorial Hospital on Oct. 14, 1999. From that day on he was a light in so many people’s lives. His love for his family was unlike any other. He was a farmer and owner of Loyal To Da Lepo.
He was preceded in death by grandparents Rawlin Kamaka Fernandez Sr. and Pastora Cayabyab.
He is survived by parents Amparo and Kamaka Fernandez III, grandparents Elaine Fernandez and Guillermo Cayabyab, siblings Meleana, Makanalei and Po‘okela, girlfriend Kela Wood, mother and father-in-law Yantini and Matthew Wood, brothers-in-law Dane, Raka and Jae, fur babies Kalihiwai Marley, Mauka Kimo, Nala Nohili and Kalehuamakanoe, and numerous uncles, aunties and cousins.
His legacy will be continued through his family, friends and anyone that perpetuates aloha ‘aina.
A celebration of life is at the Anahola Clubhouse on Saturday, May 6, at 10 a.m., with service to follow.

Guy Seichi Moriguchi
Guy Seichi Moriguchi passed away on March 10, 2023 in Los Angeles, at the age 63. He was born on June 8, 1959, in Honolulu. He was an operations manager at Aqua Engineers on Kaua‘i.
He was preceded in death by father Charles T. Moriguchi.
He is survived by wife Shirley Moriguchi, daughters Kyra (Evan Kuribayashi) Moriguchi and Mallory (Kane) Zalopany, sons Bryce Yoshida and Grant Yoshida, mother Betty S. Moriguchi, in-laws Thomas and Nives Soriano and Reuben and Florence Yoshida, grandchildren Emma Kuribayashi, Kolt Kuribayashi, Alaka‘i Zalopany, Kaniela Zalopany and Kala‘i Zalopany, siblings Duane (Denise) Moriguchi, Eric (Janell) Moriguchi, Irineo (Thelma) Soriano, Ruben (Darlene) Soriano, Emilie (Domi) Bucasas, Edwin (Luz) Soriano, Jason Yoshida and Todd Yoshida, nieces and nephew Ashlie Moriguchi, Hali‘a Moriguchi, Justin (Mariah Navor) Moriguchi and Maddux Moriguchi.
A service is Friday, May 12, at Kaua‘i Veterans Center in Lihu‘e, with visitation beginning at 2 p.m. and service to follow at 4 p.m.

John Contrades III
John Contrades III, of Kapahi, passed away at home on March 16, 2023. He was a retired welder/fabricator for R Electric Inc.
He was preceded in death by parents John Jr. and Emily Contrades, son Samuel Contrades and daughter-in-law Lei Contrades.
He is survived by wife Roberta Contrades of Kapahi, daughter Roberta (James) Dandar, sons John (Crystal) Contrades IV of Kapahi, Ronald Contrades of Princeville, Robert (Vanessa) Contrades of Lihu‘e and Patrick (Jocelyn) Contrades of Kapahi, sisters Charlotte Puckett of Tennessee and Theresa Sandberg of O‘ahu, 13 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, close friends and his beloved classmates of the Kapa‘a High School class of 1957.
Private services were held. Any monetary tributes may be made to Kaua‘i Hospice.
Alan Dean ‘Ross’ Hood
Alan Dean “Ross” Hood passed away at the age of 50, in Peoria, Arizona, on Feb. 18, 2023.
He was preceded in death by sister Michelle Lewis.
He is survived by wife Marian “Taylor,” son Dahlus, daughter Skylr, granddaughters Moanilehua and Kawehilani, mother Peggy, sister Elizabeth, niece Kailey and nephews James Timothy and Jadeyn.
His memorial is at Lihu‘e Lutheran Church on Saturday, April 29, with services starting at 3 p.m. and gathering to follow.
Frances Chiyoko Moriguchi
April 3, 1930 – February 16, 2023
Frances Chiyoko Moriguchi (nee Hokama), 92, a retired U.S. history and American studies teacher at Waimea High School, passed away peacefully at Hi‘olani Care Center at Kahala Nui. Born in Honolulu, she was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Raymond Jitsumi Moriguchi, parents Fukusei (Haruko) Hokama, and siblings Bernice (Kazuma) Furukawa and George (Etsuko) Hokama.
She is survived by sister Dorothy (Yasuhiko) Nishi, son Dr. Jaime (Julie) Moriguchi, daughters Sheryl (Russell) Grady, Jill (Russ) Hiroto and Dr. Donna Moriguchi (Dr. John) Schneider, grandchildren Kelli (Freddy) Hernandez, Dr. Kristin Moriguchi, Janessa Grady, Jennifer Grady, Sydney Hiroto, Wesley Hiroto, Lia Schneider and Peter Schneider, and great-grandchildren Troy and Cruz Hernandez.
Private services will be held.
Norma Langgas Medina
Norma Langgas Medina, 85, passed away on April 8, 2023. She was born in Bayanan, Bacoor, Cavite, Philippines, on Jan. 16, 1938, and owned Po‘ipu Taxi.
She was preceded in passing by husband Angel Medina, parents Juan and Arsenia Langgas, son Danilo Medina and three infant daughters.
Norma is survived by children Susan (Joe) Llego, Armando Medina, Rizalde (Josephine) Medina and Rosemarie Medina, grandchildren Sherryl Llego, Joanna Llego, Angelina (Jael) Caoile, Aaron (Cathleen) Medina, Chadwin (Kim) Medina, Arnel (Krystal) Medina, Thomas Vierra, Justin (Michelle) Medina, Jennilyne (Jake) Medina, Chanelle (Michael) Garcia and Kai Medina, great-grandchildren Shenalyne (Jonathan) Dela Cruz-Llego, Kori Ann (Nainoa) Kuali‘i, Carah (Gigi) Koerte-Llego, Tyra Koerte-Llego, Marlie Keli‘ikuli-Llego, Talea Keli‘ikuli-Llego, Jael Jaimeson Caoile, Caydance Medina, Cienna Medina, Aliyah Medina, Zayleah Medina, Chysen Medina, Kenzie Perreira, Ashten Medina, Alvey Medina, Jeianna Locquiao, Aira Tangonan, Serenity Garcia, Jaden Garcia, Raiden Garcia and Bailey, and one great-great-grandbaby Zarya.
A celebration of life is Saturday May 13, at Holy Cross Church in Kalaheo. Visitation is from 9 to 10 a.m., Mass from 10 to 11 a.m., and burial at the Hanapepe Chinese Filipino & Portuguese Cemetery at 11:15 a.m.

Anselmo Galanga ‘Papa Joe’ Barba
Anselmo Galanga “Papa Joe” Barba, of Kekaha and Chino, California, passed away on April 13, 2023, at the residence of his son-in-law and daughter in Chino, California, and now rests in peace with his beloved wife Esmenia Yadao Barba. Born on April 14, 1924, in Banayoyo, Ilocos Sur, Philippines, he was called to rest at 98 years old, one day prior to his 99th birthday.
He is survived by daughter Selma (Calvin) Myles of Chino, California, sons Paul (Sharlene) Barba of Kekaha and Standford (April) Barba of Alhambra, California, grandchildren Joshua and Christen Myles of Los Angeles, Kierra Barba of Mesa, Colorado and Desiree Barba of Alhambra, California, great-grandchildren Marley Simone Myles and Kamdyn Marcano of Los Angeles, and Jocko Barba of Mesa, Colorado.
Friends may visit with the family on Saturday, April 29, from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. at St. Theresa Church in Kekaha. Mass will begin at 11 a.m. with burial to follow at the Kekaha Public Cemetery.

Alice Shiraishi Ching, 94, passed away in Kapa‘a on April 12, 2023. She was born in Lana‘i City, Lana‘i on Jan. 6, 1929, and worked as a secretary at a law firm.
She was preceded in passing by parents Ikuji and Tomo Shiraishi, husband Edwin K.D. Ching, siblings Clinton and Spencer Shiraishi and Jonsie (Eugene) Yamamoto.
She is survived by sons Michael (Irene), Jason and Ben (Natalie) Kobayashi, grandchildren Tyler (Nohelani), Tori, Kallen, and Kadden Kobayashi, great-grandchildren Kyrie and Kamryn Kobayashi, and sister Jane (Buddy) Festerling of Honolulu.
Private services will be held. The family requests no koden (gifts).

Russell J. Maeda
Russell J. Maeda, 75, passed away on April 2, 2023. He was a Vietnam veteran and a retired contractor. He was born on Jan. 21, 1948 in Lihu‘e.
He was preceded in death by father Tetsuro “Rosy” Maeda.
He is survived by wife Charlotte Maeda, sons Donavan and Darren White, mother Bessie T. Maeda, brother Darryl K. Maeda, sisters Gale (Alfred) Domingsel and Rachel (Henry) Furutani, grandchildren Cody and Alex White, and numerous nieces and nephews.
A celebration of life is Saturday, May 6, at Lihu‘e Christian Church, with visitation beginning at 10 a.m. and service to start at 11 a.m.
The family is requesting no flowers or koden, only your presence to bid him aloha.
A private inurnment will be held at the Kaua‘i Veterans Cemetery.

Bessie T. Maeda
Bessie T. Maeda, 97, passed away peacefully at home on April 17, 2023. She was born in Lihu‘e on July 16, 1925, and worked as a secretary for Mokihana Insurance and Dean Y. Ishii Insurance Company.
She was preceded in death by husband Tetsuro “Rosy” Maeda, son Russell J. Maeda, and parents Jihei and Eleanor Miura.
She is survived by son Darryl K. Maeda, daughters Gale (Alfred) Domingsel and Rachel (Henry) Furutani, grandchildren Ryan (Annabel) Domingsel, Ryden (Jennifer) Domingsel, Jodi (Lester) Kunimitsu, Derek (Lani) Maeda, Marci (Adrian) Fernandez, Shelly (Joseph) Cassler, Donavan White and Darren White, and 14 great grandchildren.
A private service will be held at a later date. The family requests in lieu of flowers and monetary gifts, you think of a memory you had of Bessie and hopefully it will warm your heart and make you smile.
“Grandma B,” as she was known to our family, lived a full life until the very end, and was surrounded by family every night during her last month here on earth. She was our bond, and will be missed.
