KALAHEO — The Kalaheo Elementary School Drama Club announced the production of James and the Giant Peach Jr., which will take place on May 5, 6, 12, and 13 in the school’s cafeteria turned theatre.
Marly Madayag, the production’s director, said this presentation is the first since the pandemic shutdown, and the students are excited about taking the stage.
Tickets are now on sale through the Kalaheo School website at www.kalaheoschool.com for the production whose curtains rise starting at 7 p.m. on each of the presentation nights. Tickets will also be sold at the door from 6 p.m. on each of the nights the production is presented.
The Kalaheo School Drama Club has about 30 students in its membership with many students having been deprived of stage experience during the pandemic shutdowns.
“We have a few students who are now in the fifth grade that started when they were in the third grade,” said Production Manager Wendy Casillas, who has been busy constructing sets and overseeing the group anxious for the presentation debut. “They have some experience, but for the most part, this will be the first time they’re experiencing a real production.”
Based on a book by Roald Dahl, James is sent by his aunts to cut down their old fruit tree. He discovers a magic potion that grows a big peach that rolls into the ocean and launches an incredible journey with singing insects that ride the fruit across the ocean.
Ticket prices are $1 for keiki 2 years old through fifth grade, and $5 for students in sixth grade and older.
The Kalaheo School Drama Club has been around since 2004 and has produced an amazing library of productions by the generations of students that have passed through the doors of Kalaheo Elementary School, each generation taking their turn, and improving on the cafeteria turned theatre.
