LIHU‘E — A string of vehicular break-ins and thefts in residential neighborhoods prompted an advisory on Saturday from local authorities, who are urging residents and visitors alike to be more mindful of suspicious activity.
The advisory from the Kaua‘i Police Department directed people to lock all doors to their vehicles and residences, and avoid leaving valuables in vehicles or in plain view from the outside.
Residents and visitors were also asked to be more observant of unfamiliar vehicles or persons in their neighborhoods. The police department did not cite any one particular instance on Kaua‘i, instead referring to multiple events in issuing the advisory.
“In recent reports, subjects are targeting unsecured vehicles,” said department acting Capt. Kennison Nagahisa, of the Investigative Services Bureau, in a statement. “They are quietly going through neighborhoods and checking for unlocked vehicles for an easy opportunity to steal valuables.”
The thieves appear to be taking advantage of certain situations.
“It is very difficult to have officers everywhere at all times,” Nagahisa said in a statement. “So, it is important that we remain vigilant, and by doing so we can help deter crime in our own neighborhoods and communities.”
Residents and visitors are advised to report suspicious activities to the police department dispatch by calling 808-241-1711. People who wish to remain anonymous can provide information by calling Crime Stoppers Kaua‘i at 808-246-8300 or submitting a tip online at cskauai.org, or through the Crime Stoppers Kaua‘i P3 Tip mobile app.
