Congratulations, David Chaikin (he’s a Dinosaur beach volleyball tournament champion from 1995 and 1996), Fonz Nartatez (he’s a runnerup from the 2021 Dinosaur, where Derek Kessler beat him and Kanoa Nartatez for the title), and all those hands that make the Dinosaur beach volleyball tournament work! Mahalo, Derek and the Duke’s crew, for being a part of the action (they had two courts set up near the downstairs dining area!) during the day hours. Got to watch Merrie Monarch at night.

Randall Francisco (he was helping with the Kaua‘i Brewers Festival on Saturday, April 15, 2023, at the Kaua‘i Filipino Cultural Center in Puhi) said the Hanapepe: Our Hawaiian Sense of Place Festival, presented by the Hanapepe Economic Alliance starting Thursday at 5 p.m., is post-Merrie Monarch, where interest in Hawaiian culture is stoked. The festival continues Friday and Saturday with talks and demonstrations on Ni‘ihau shell lei and earrings, fresh flower lei making (Kaua‘i Museum Lei Contest coming up on May 1 at the Royal Sonesta Kaua‘i Resort Lihu‘e!), kahili pa‘alima feather, ipuheke‘ole making and hula, coconut weaving and more.
Saturday is also Earth Day, where people can enjoy the collaboration of the County of Kaua‘i, Kaua‘i Community College, and Kaua‘i Economic Development Board to get knowledge (many hands-on activities) on the long-term sustainability efforts.
Tommy Noyes of the Friends of Lydgate Park and Kamalani Playground is doing a series of activities that people can sign up for starting at 7:30 a.m. Saturday, April 22, 2023, (Kumu Puna Dawson is doing a special sunrise event from 5:30 a.m. at the neighboring he‘iau), and the Kaua‘i EV (stands for electric vehicle) is hosting a free Drive Electric Earth Day event from 9 a.m. to noon at the county charger parking lot.
