KAPA‘A — Island School tried to get into the score books on Thursday during a Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation baseball game against Kapa‘a at Ron Martin Field on the campus of Kapa‘a High School.
But, in the seventh frame, the Warriors defense thwarted any Voyagers effort to cross the plate, as Kapa‘a catcher Makoa Chong cut down the second and third outs at the plate for the 8-0 Kapa‘a win in a game rescheduled to accommodate the Kapa‘a High School prom.
Chong was the leading Kapa‘a batter with a 4-for-4 showing at the plate, scoring once, and driving in three Kapa‘a runs in the contest where Kapa‘a piled up its 8 runs on nine hits, and committing just one error.
Led by Chong’s hitting, Kapa‘a scored in every one of six innings. Pitcher Bob Manintin finished with two hits and one run batted in.
Manintin picked up the win on the hill after throwing five complete frames and giving up just two of the Voyagers’ six hits. He also struck out four Island School hitters. Warrior Kyrin Ibaan closed with two innings of work, being strapped for four Island School hits and striking out two hitters.
Aiden Alvarez suffered the loss on the mound, giving up four runs on seven Kapa‘a hits in three innings of work and striking out one. Alvarez got help from Xailer Duarte, who threw for two frames giving up a run on three hits and striking out three Warrior hitters. Kameron Lee closed by giving up a run, a hit, and walking one Warrior.
Duarte and Lyndon Kealoha had the hot bats for Island School, each hitter getting two hits apiece. Hits by Blake Braun and Alvarez accounted for the Voyagers’ six hits.
With the Thursday contest completed, the Voyagers visit Ron Martin field on Saturday for the second contest of the doubleheader series. The first pitch goes off at 9 a.m.
On Saturday evening, Waimea High School comes to Vidinha Stadium for a doubleheader against Kaua‘i High School. First pitch goes off at 4 p.m.
