Dr. Kathleen E. Nuccio
Dr. Kathleen E. Nuccio, age 73, passed away Sunday, March 19, 2023, at Majestic Pines in Grand Rapids, Minnnesota.
She was born in 1949 in Hackensack, New Jersey, to Luke and Dorothy Nuccio. She graduated from Paramus High School in Paramus, New Jersey. She continued her education at Fairleigh Dickinson University in New Jersey, achieving a bachelor’s degree in social work. She received her master’s degree at Fordham University, Lincoln Center, New York City, and earned her doctorate degree in social work at Bryn Mawr College in Pennsylvania, where she won the Susan B. Anthony Award for her dissertation on pay equity.
She was a professor at Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio, at Augsburg College in Minneapolis, and retired from the University of Minnesota-Duluth.
She continued many activities and services in her retirement. She was a member of Spirit of Christ the Healer Catholic Community, as well as Christ Episcopal Church, both communities of Grand Rapids, Minnesota.
Even in retirement, she continued to advocate for social and church justice, focusing on the vulnerable and the marginalized. She loved her home on Loon Lake with her partner, and was devoted to family and friends, especially her dogs.
She was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her partner in life and spirit of 36 years, Dr. Maria Annoni of Cohasset, Minnesota, twin sister Maureen (Madeleine Hiraga-Nuccio) Nuccio-Hiraga of Kapa‘a, brother Dr. Richard A. Nuccio of Oxnard, California, nephew Erin (Jordan) Nuccio of Willamette Valley, Oregon, and the many extended Annoni family members and friends.
A celebration of life will be held in the summer of 2023, with a date to be determined.

Mabel Makanani
Mabel Makanani, 95, passed away peacefully at home on March 15, 2023. She was born in Lihu‘e on May 23, 1927, and worked in retail for Kay O’ Kaua‘i at Coco Palms and Garment Factory to You, and retired from High As A Kite after Hurricane ‘Iniki.
She was preceded in passing by parents George Kaluna Makaneole and Mary Makaneole, brothers George Jr. and Charles Makaneole, and daughters Realyn and Charlene Kahelelani Makanani.
She is survived by son Attwood Maikai Makanani and daughters Pamela Aulani Nakoa, Rachelle Mapuana Makanani Nam, Terralyn (Daniel) Pomaikai Makakani-Pilila‘au and Londa Mae Fukumitsu, grandchildren Lyanna and Kalani Nakoa, Malia, Maikai, Lono and Hina Makanani, Chelsea (Dustin) Lee and Candiss (Fedna) Pierre Louis, Kahai (Kinohi), Ulu, Kolea (Summer) Fukumitsu and Maluhia (Bud) MacPherson, and 30 great-grandchildren.
A celebration of life is Saturday, April 22, at Borthwick Kaua‘i Mortuary in Koloa, with visitation beginning at 8:30 a.m. and service at 9:30 a.m. Lei and flowers are welcomed. A luncheon will follow at 1:30 p.m. at the Kaua‘i War Memorial Convention Hall in Lihu‘e.
