People have been waiting to get out following all the shutdowns and restrictions from the COVID-19 pandemic. Melanie Okamoto (any big pickleball events coming up?) of the county Department of Parks and Recreation estimated more than 800 young keiki and their families braved all that rain on Saturday (and Sunday!) to participate in the Mayor’s Track Meet at Vidinha Stadium in Lihu‘e.

Mayor Derek S.K. Kawakami even ran a relay leg for Alaka‘i O Kaua‘i Charter School. And who was that young lady on Sunday who beat the mayor in a 400-meter run? Kudos to all on getting this massive (and popular!) event back off the ground post-pandemic, Now, we just gotta make sure everyone don’t catch the cold bug.
All that activity didn’t stop the Spring Festival nor the Easter bunny at Kukui Grove Center in Lihu‘e. Jeanette Otsuka Chang even joined the ranks of those giving out prizes and other goodies.
The Shops at Kukui‘ula hosts its Easter egg hunt on Wednesday following the opening surges of the pop-up farmers market.
And don’t forget the Hope Collective helicopter Easter egg drop that starts at 9 a.m. on Saturday at the Vidinha Stadium soccer fields (what happened to the Kaua‘i Soccer Association games?), where Coach Dave Walker and The Rotary Club of West Kaua‘i will be holding the Rotary Track Meet that is supposed to start at 8:30 a.m.
And, don’t forget Comic Con2 that opens at 11 a.m. at the Royal Sonesta Kaua‘i Resort Lihu‘e on Saturday, where Kikaida comes back to Hawai‘i one more time.
All that activity winds down with the “Hop!” movie night (and the Mokihana Club fundraising concert!).
Happy Easter (and Hanamatsuri)!
