Carol Yotsuda of the Garden Island Arts Council was going to stop at Times Supermarket for a bag of azuki beans (uncooked) to try and take care of the mebo (pink eye for those who never had it) that’s been bothering her through the last E Kanikapila Kakou for 2023 that featured The Makaha Sons at the Kaua‘i Beach Resort.

Congratulations, Roy Nishida, Kelvin Moniz and all the East Kaua‘i Lions Club on the celebration of the 85th anniversary of the club charter. The club hosted a group of off-island guests including Diane Kent, who is on the Big Island, and the Japan guests from Shimonishi Lions Club, who were praying for a weather window on Sunday so they could enjoy a helicopter tour. The gathering filled the ballroom at the Hilton Garden Inn Kaua‘i Wailua Bay, where Lion Harvey Kinoshita was surprised with a special commendation from the Lions International director.
Kudos to Marlene Duarte, who was only recently promoted to market director for the Grove Farm Market, that welcomed its crafters on the “first Saturday of even-numbered months” on Saturday. Kalena Pacheco of Waipua Gardens’ (ever see a hinahina blossom?) shared her tent during the downpour — works far better than any umbrella.
Carol Yotsuda was there with her BoroBoro Boutique (they had stuff at EKK, too!) gang that included artist Shannon Hiramoto, the creator of January as Mu‘umu‘u Month.
Kudos, Mayor Derek S.K. Kawakami (were you there when he ran a leg for Alaka‘i O Kaua‘i relay team?) for hosting the annual Mayor’s Track Meet for the young elementary school keiki and their parents, with Patrick Porter and the ‘ohana from the county Department of Parks and Recreation. It’s no April Fools Day joke, Ron Wiley, who’s been on air for 34 years!
