PUHI — A visitor from Kansas succumbed to injuries suffered in a traffic crash in the Hokulei Village Shopping Center parking lot on Friday evening, authorities said.
The 76-year-old male, whose name has not been released, apparently fell and collided with a gray Toyota Tacoma pickup at approximately 6 p.m. The male was crossing the parking lot used by Safeway customers and across from the Texaco gas station.
The pickup truck was operated by a 27-year-old Hanapepe man, whose name was not released.
“First responders with American Medical Response and the Kaua‘i Fire Department treated the visitor at the scene before transporting him to Wilcox Medical Center, where he later died,” the Kaua‘i Police Department said in a statement. The incident led to the parking lot being closed and cordoned off with yellow police tape, as authorities investigated the scene. At the time of the incident, there were dozens of vehicles parked or moving through the parking lot. The cause of the crash is under investigation by the police department’s Traffic Safety Unit, but a preliminary report indicated that speed and impairment did not appear to be contributing factors in the crash. Toxicology reports are pending.

A “traffic crash”? It was a pedestrian accident. Get some reporters who can write.
What a shame. My spouse and I often wonder who in their right mind ever designed that parking lot….a million accidents waiting to happen. Condolences to this poor man’s family.
