PRINCEVILLE — The Kaua‘i Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals recently got a shot in the arm when Michelle Rundgren, owner of Tiki ‘Iniki bar and restaurant in Princeville Shopping Center, donated $7,000 to benefit the KSPCA dogs and cats.
The donation represented all of the proceeds from every mai tai sold at Tiki ‘Iniki in February,
The KSPCA said resources on Kaua‘i are few and far between for animals in need.
“These days, Kaua‘i SPCA is one of the only places they can come to get help. KSPCA has had to take in hundreds of strays this year because of the crisis levels of homeless pets on the island,” the KSPCA said in a release.
“The Kaua‘i Humane Society has been turning away strays, and is at maximum capacity. As a 501 (c3) nonprofit, KSPCA does all of this with no facility and no government funding.”
KSPCA has been working hard to help Kaua‘i’s animals for the past four years, working behind the scenes, without fuss, and without promotion, the release said.
The problem of pet homelessness on Kaua‘i has reached crisis levels, and KSPCA has never been asked to save so many animals, confronted with so many pets in need of medical care, or had to provide critical spay/neuter surgeries in such large quantities.
KSPCA said besides taking in hundreds of strays this year into its growing foster program, the organization continues to take on the hardest medical and behavioral cases, giving the animals a second chance. KSPCA has pulled at-risk animals from the shelter to get them the specialized medical care they need.
“Remember Anela, the dog that was shot in the head?” KSPCA said. “Following six months of care and having a specialist perform surgery, she survived, got adopted, and is now living her best life.”
KSPCA also has a Veterinary Assistance Program to help Kaua‘i pet owners who are struggling financially, helping subsidize the cost of veterinary care for their pets. KSPCA has helped numerous families stay together.
