PO‘IPU — Rains that generated flood warnings for the island of Kaua‘i delayed the start of the preseason doubles tennis tournament at Po‘ipu Kai tennis courts on Saturday.
“We start at 9 a.m. Sunday,” said Jennifer Hreljac, a coach with Kaua‘i High School and one of the tournament directors. “Hopefully, we should be able to wrap everything up in one day.”
The preseason play will involve boys and girls tennis players from at least six schools, including a team of Marauder tennis players from Waipahu High School that visited the island to participate in the tournament.
“We have schools like the Kaua‘i Christian Academy, a couple of online schools, and Island School joining the public schools like Kapa‘a High School and Kaua‘i High School,” Hreljac said.
Participating players include the top-seeded duo of Savannah and Maddison Hubbard. Second seed goes to the duo of Sarah Magdato and Jazlyn Yamada. Third seed goes to the pair of Lauren Shaw and Darien Thompson, with Island School’s Brooklyn Mackey and Katie Brown getting the No. 4 seed on the girls courts.
Other participating players include Kate Nakamura, Jeanine Longboy, Airis Tungpalan, Beatrice Del Rosario, Taylee Yoshimoto, Samantha Tominaga, Rain Hannsz, Toni Umalla, Mia Marty, Parker Reed, Ashley Chan, Lily Corpuz, Genevieve Cortez, Sharba Holi, Chloe Hannsz, Ocean Amador, Madi Welsh and Lilah Hamid.
For the boys, Dillon Fulks pairs with Jayson Muramaru for the top seed, followed by Aaron Saito teaming with AJ Santa Cruz for the second seed. Third seed goes to the pair of Logan Lanai and Jaylen Yamada, with the duo of Tanner Hubbard and Isaac Mirey getting the fourth seed.
Other players participating in boys’ play include Aiden Pine, Louis Reale, Cody Torres, Brody Kapili, Cheikh Sall, Assane Sall, Rasil Manandhar and Nigel Agcaoili.
Hreljac said there will be a Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation coaches’ meeting later this month, and following that meeting, a KIF schedule of play should be available.
