NAWILIWILI — Following two rounds of play at the 46th John Burns Intercollegiate tournament, Brigham Young University continues to lead the field of 21 teams with a 18-under 271, five strokes better than No. 19 Arizona at the Ocean Course at Hokuala.
“The golfers were able to complete 27 holes on Thursday,” said a member of the Ocean Course Pro Shop. “The plan is to try and complete 27 holes between the rain and weather on Friday. That would mean all 54 holes would be complete, leaving Saturday open.”
Carson Lundell finished Round 2 with a 63, and Keanu Akina ended Round 2 with a 67 to lead the BYU Cougars team play on Friday. Both golfers are tied for second overall with a two-day total of 133.
Lundell, following completion of Round 2, also leads the player leaderboard with his 63 in Round 2, and is three strokes better than Sam Bennett of Texas A&M, who finished Round 2 with a 67.
Arizona, according to information from Pate Clarson in his first day recap, the three-time Burns champions after winning the tournament in 1992, 2003, and 2004, was fueled by Zach Pollo, who finished Round 2 at 66 to lead the Arizona scoring with a 36-hole 136.
Tiger Christensen, firing a 67 in Round 1, bogged to finish Round 2 with a 71, but continues to be among the top three Arizona golfers with a two-round 138. Chase Sienkiewicz, finishing Round 1 with a 71, rebounded between the rain to finish Round 2 with a 68 and is the third of the top three Arizona golfers with a 36-hole total of 139.
Tournament host University of Hawai‘i sits at 20th place with a 296 following the completion of Round 2. Atsuya Oishi, finishing his 36th hole with a 1-under 71, and Blaze Akana power the Hawai‘i team after Akana finished Round 2 with a 1-over 73.
According to Clarson, Long Beach State sophomore Ian Gilligan broke the Ocean Course at Hokuala with an 11-under 61 during Round 1 that was played on Thursday. That performance, which included nine birdies, two eagles and two bogies, broke the 8-under 64 that was set by reigning U.S. Amateur champion Bennett.
The 54-hole 46th John Burns Intercollegiate is scheduled to be completed on Saturday at the Ocean Course at Hokuala. Walking spectators are allowed for free.
