KAPA‘A — Kaua‘i High School wrestling teams took the boys and girls Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation wrestling championship titles at Bernice Hundley Gym on Saturday.
The Red Raider boys team finished the day compiling 134.5 points during the tournament where 50 wrestlers weighed in and participated in 44 bouts in 24 divisions.
The Waimea High School boys finished with 107 points for the runner-up berth, followed by Kapa‘a High School collecting 62 points for third place.
The Kaua‘i High School girls also picked up top honors with 64 points, followed by Waimea High School girls finishing with 56 points for the runner-up slot. Kapa‘a girls piled up 18 points for third place.
Tanner Hubbard earned fastest pin honors during his match, where he clocked a pin in 28 seconds. According to Tournament Director Coach Mac Pigott, 22 pins were recorded in the first round with just three matches going the full three rounds.
Following four hours of wrestling, the winners of the 24 divisions qualified for a berth to the Texaco Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association wrestling championships that will take place Feb. 24-25 at Cannon Activities Center at Brigham Young University-Hawai‘i on O‘ahu.
