Kudos, Kumu Hula Leina‘ala Pavao Jardin of Halau Ka Lei Mokihana O Leina‘ala, on announcing the halau’s intention of participating in the Queen Lili‘uokalani Keiki Hula Competition.
The halau is hosting a three-day pop-up to generate funds to help offset the costs of getting the keiki to O‘ahu. The pop-up runs from 2 to 8 p.m. on Friday, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday, and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, at the former Pier 1 store in the Kukui Marketplace (that’s the one close to the Target store).
Leina‘ala said the pop-up will feature Manaola (Edie Ignacio Neumiller is already getting excited about the designs), a group of crafters, and lots of live entertainment and ‘olelo Hawai‘i (it’s ‘Olelo Hawai‘i Month!). “‘Olelo” means, literally, “to say.”
Meanwhile, Belle Meephol took advantage of her day off from Big Monster Thai and Sushi to help out at the Pau Hana Market Monday at Kukui Grove Center (Tom Clements was looking for sweet potatoes), where Sue Kanoho got a taste of her first poha (Amy Chun bought the last tray from the Rutters and was passing around samples). Francis and Geraldine Baniaga, of Mom’s Filipino Comfort Food, were busy at the Downtown Lihu‘e Night Market, and still attracted a good-sized line at the Pau Hana Market (Amy said the food is good, is why).
Kudos, too, to Patrick Porter (he didn’t have red on at the Valentine’s Day lunch) and the county Department of Park and Recreation (Melanie Okamoto is with the department and Na Kupuna Council) on hosting the more than 200 kupuna (those Kaua‘i Ocean Discovery volunteers were happy the lunch was on Tuesday because KOD is not open that day) at the Kaua‘i Beach Resort near Hanama‘ulu.
