LIHU‘E — An Anahola man was arraigned for a range of charges, including negligent homicide, related to a fatal, four-car, hit-and-run accident.
Thomas Castro was arrested on a bench warrant on Feb. 8, and appeared in the Fifth Circuit Court in Lihu‘e the following day, where he entered a not guilty plea.
Castro was a driver in a collision that occurred on Good Friday, April 15, 2022, that killed one woman and injured two others.
The Kaua‘i Police Department said Castro was driving a white Chevrolet pickup truck southbound on Kuhio Highway in Anahola when he struck a blue pickup truck as it was turning. The second pickup then collided with a Ford Edge heading northbound.
Castro’s truck continued on the shoulder of the highway and struck another vehicle before he fled the scene, the police department reported. He turned himself in the next week.
The driver and passenger of the Ford Edge were transported to Wilcox Medical Center, where the passenger succumbed to her injuries the following day.
Police later identified her as Roxanne Fasanella, a 59-year-old Princeville resident. The driver, then-79-year-old Beverly Fasanella, was later transferred to an O‘ahu hospital with serious injuries.
The court filing alleges that another man suffered bone fractures as a result of the crash.
Castro is charged with negligent homicide in the second degree, negligent injury in the first and second degrees, inattention to driving, driving without a license, and a charge related to fleeing the scene of the accident.
Castro’s bail was set at $75,000.
