Corine DeWitt of Princeville was judged winner of the blue ribbon in the Vicky’s Fabric Miniature Quilt Challenge.
The entries are on display as part of the Kaua‘i Quilt Show 2023 at the Kaua‘i Society of Artists gallery at Kukui Grove Center.
“Focus,” the name of the winning quilt, contains 1,180 pieces, DeWitt said.
“And I didn’t keep track of how long it took me to create,” she said. “I used the Foundation Paper Piecing to create this piece that each square has 34 pieces. I took the designated fabric, one of the conditions for entry into the Miniaure Quilt Challenge, and used a piece here and a piece there. I even took the orange and used tiny bits of it into the quilt design.”
The Miniature Quilt Challenge, posed by one of the Kaua‘i Quilt Show sponsors, Vicky’s Fabrics, is the only section besides the Viewer’s Choice award that is judged based on the criteria of using the designated fabric, size and other points relevant to quilting.
“We have winners from all over,” said Lea Ingram, one of the Kaua‘i Quilt Show coordinators. “The contest is advertised online so we have entries coming in from all over.”
Additionaly, the miniature quilts are on display in the KSA gallery windows for the duration of the show, which runs through Feb. 22.
Other winners besides DeWitt include three red ribbon (judges favorite) winners: Peggy Fisher of Regina, Canada, Miranda Thornhill of Princeville and Jeni Hardy of Princeville.
White ribbon (honorable mention) winners include Erika Hessheimer of Kapa‘a, Lesley Morris of Wainiha, Tammy Quinn of Kilauea, Cornelia Weeks of ‘Ele‘ele and Sue Ann Dignusto of Kapa‘a.
DeWitt, like several of the Miniature Quilt winners, also have full-size quilts in the show.
The Kaua‘i Quilt Show 2023 is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and there is no admission to view and, perhaps, purchase some of the quilt pieces.
There are also more than 50 Donation Quilts that, if purchased, entitle the buyer to have the proceeds of the sale designated to benefit any of eight selected Kaua‘i nonprofits.
