HONOLULU — Two of the four seeded teams in the Heide &Cook Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association Division II boys basketball state championships were upset in the quarterfinals that took place Wednesday in Honolulu.
Kaua‘i High School, the defending Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation champion, and seeded No. 3 in the D2 state championships, was not one of the vanquished after defeating the unseeded Honoka‘a Dragons of the Big Island Interscholastic Federation, 62-47, during the quarterfinals.
The Red Raiders advance to the semifinals and face University Lab School, who defeated the No. 2 seeded Farrington Governors during the quarterfinals on Wednesday night.
Top seeded Kohala High School, taking a 10-point win over the Kalani Falcons in the quarterfinals, will be facing Hawai‘i Baptist Academy in the semifinals. HBA advanced after upsetting No. 4 Seabury Hall 63-62 in the quarterfinals.
During the quarterfinals, Kaua‘i was trailing 13-11 following the opening quarter. The Red Raiders came back with a 13-5 second quarter run to a 24-18 lead, and despite being outpointed 15-17 in the final frame, was able to notch the 62-47 win that came on the triple threat of Cade Myers, Noah Louis, and Joshua Rego.
Myers led the Raiders with a pair of assists, two rebounds, and 18 points, followed by Louis bucketing 15 points, 14 boards, and getting an assist. Rego rounded out the attack leaders with 14 points, a pair of assists, and five rebounds. Syrus Delos Reyes had 10 rebounds, nine points and four assists.
Mauloa Tagabi topped the Dragons’ effort on 12 points with an assist, and a pair of boards. Rideout Kiandray finished with 11 points, an assist, and four rebounds.
Over at the Waipio Soccer Complex, the Island School boys soccer team, ranked No. 2 in the Motiv8 Foundation HHSAA Division II boys soccer state championships, will be advancing to face No. 3 PAC-5 in the tournament semifinals, Friday starting at 5 p.m. at the Roosevelt High School.
According to scoringlive.com, the Voyager men shut down McKinley High School, 8-0 during the quarterfinals, Thursday at the Waipio Soccer Complex, and PAC-5 was a 2-1 winner over the Hawai‘i Preparatory Academy team.
Top seed Kamehameha Schools-Hawai‘i was a 3-1 winner over the Waialua Bulldogs and will face Seabury Hall in the semifinals after Seabury upset the No. 4 seed Roosevelt High School, 2-0 during the quarterfinals.
The championship game for the D2 boys soccer is scheduled for Saturday at the Waipio Soccer Complex.
