LIHU‘E — In Girls Division II state tournament results, the second-seeded Kapa‘a High soccer team faced unseeded Pac-5 for the state title at 5 p.m. Saturday at Waipahu High School, a site that was changed due to the inclement weather hitting O‘ahu early Saturday morning.
The Lady Warriors earned the berth for championship play after nudging past Hawai‘i Preparatory Academy, 1-0 Friday evening when Emeli Rubel found the net in the seventh minute.
The Lady Warriors entered play on Thursday, Feb. 2, during the DII quarterfinals, and shut down unseeded Nanakuli 4-0 on quick goals from Liliwai Keahiolalo, who found the net within the first minute of play at the Waipio Sports Complex.
Charlize Kenney boosted the Lady Warriors with a penalty kick for goal in the second minute. Mia Kaneakua-Inos scored in the 16th minute, and Julia Durocher’s goal in the 42nd minute capped the victory.
Kaua‘i High’s girls soccer team, on track for the title grab, was bounced off course when the Red Raiders suffered a 4-0 shutout by Pac 5 on Friday night at Farrington High School. The best the Raiders can hope for at this point is third place. Saturday morning, when the weather hit O‘ahu, that hope disappeared when the HHSAA canceled all consolation games. The DI and DII title games were moved to be played at Waipahu High School with no television coverage, and an uncertain radio broadcast coverage.
Kaua‘i High got a pair of goals from Aubrey Agena (49th minute) and Aileah Villatora (73rd minute) in the second half to ensure its 3-0 victory over Seabury Hall on the opening day of the DII tournament. Kylah Racca broke the ice in the 17th minute to give the Red Raiders a 1-0 bulge at the break.
During action on Thursday, Feb. 2, Kaua‘i High got help from Kailua, which gave the Red Raiders its first score, an own goal, in the 32nd minute to knot the contest, 1-1, after Kailua broke the ice with a Katie Finkler goal in the 10th minute.
Kaua‘i High broke the stalemate in the final minute before the break, when Villatora found the net to give the Red Raiders a 2-1 edge at the whistle. Racca and Naia Boudreau iced the 4-1 win with goals in the 52nd and 65th minutes, respectively.
Girls basketball
The No. 4 seed Kapa‘a High girls basketball team upset top seeded Hawai‘i Baptist Academy, 34-26 Friday night to advance to the DII title game against unseeded Hanalani, which beat the second-seeded Kamehameha Schools-Hawai‘i by two points, 37-35, Friday night at the Afook Chinen Civic Auditorium in Hilo, Hawai‘i Island.
To get past the top seed Hawai‘i Baptist Academy, the Lady Warriors were led by Olivia Malafu, who bucketed 12 points and eight rebounds, getting help from Denise Alfonso with nine points and 12 rebounds, and guard Taira Samiano who added eight points and a board.
Leaders for HBA were Trislyn Maeda and Joey Lin, each player scoring eight points in the effort. Lin grabbed seven boards and Maeda snagged a pair of rebounds.
Tipoff for the DII state girls basketball title was set for 7 p.m. on Saturday at the Afook Chinen Civic Auditorium in Hilo, Hawai‘i Island.
The Lady Warrior hoopsters earned the advance by defeating Pearl City High School 68-14 on Thursday, Feb. 2, behind the three-way threat led by Malafu, who netted 18 points and grabbed 11 boards against the Chargers.
Samiano added 15 points and three rebounds, and Angeline Nizo contributed 11 points, including a trio from outside the 3-point arc. She also snagged two boards.
Alesha DeWeever topped the Pearl City effort with six points and three rebounds.
Boys soccer
The Island School varsity boys soccer team was named the No. 2 seed for the Motiv8 Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association Division II boys soccer state championships that will contest on Feb. 9 through 11 on O‘ahu, the association announced Friday morning.
After earning the Kaua‘i Interscholastic Federation title by tying the Kapa‘a boys on Jan. 28, the Voyagers enter the DII state tournament by facing the McKinley Tigers during the tournament quarterfinals at the Waipio Soccer Complex.
The championship contest for DII is Saturday, Feb. 11, starting at 5 p.m. at the Waipio Main Stadium on O‘ahu
