LIHU‘E — A fast-moving thunderstorm blew across Kaua‘i, generating rain rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour before moving away from the island.
The storm, which wreaked havoc on roads and bridges, led to a flood advisory being issued through 4 p.m. Saturday by the National Weather Service Office in Honolulu. The flood advisory was preceded by a flash flood warning.
Kuhio Highway near the Hanalei River was closed due to elevated stream levels. In addition, numerous roadways were affected due to heavy rainfall on the island.
Haua‘ala Road near Keapana Bridge was closed earlier Saturday, only to be reopened later in the day, the County of Kaua‘i Emergency Management Agency said.
Boulders were also reported on a portion of Koke‘e Road, as well as debris on Awawa Road in Hanapepe Valley and a downed tree on ‘Oma‘o Road. Kekaha Road, near the post office, also flooded.
The weather outlook is forecast to improve on Sunday, and then into next week. Isolated showers are expected on Sunday, as are partly sunny skies with a high near 77 and a low of 62, the National Weather Service said.
Similar conditions are in the forecast on Monday and Tuesday.
