KALAHEO — Kaua‘i Habitat for Humanity Executive Director Milani Pimental announced Monday that the Kaua‘i Habitat for Humanity has acquired a 0.83 acre parcel of land off of Pu‘u Road in Kalaheo.
“The Pu‘u Maluhia project will feature six affordable units in the form of Condominium Property Regime,” Pimental said. “Simply put, CPR is a form of real property ownership in Hawai‘i. We will be building six truly affordable two-bedroom and three-bedroom homes for households whose gross income is below 80 percent of the Kaua‘i area median income.”
Kaua‘i Habitat Board President Doug Haigh said the project has the support of the seller, and the County Housing Agency in moving Pu‘u Maluhia forward.
“We are grateful for the cooperative efforts on the part of the seller, Pu‘u Land LLC, to enable the purchase of Pu‘u Maluhia so that Kaua‘i Habitat can continue to provide homes at affordable prices for low- to very-low income Kaua‘i buyers,” Haigh said.
“Kaua‘i Habitat is also fortunate to have the continued support of the Kaua‘i County Housing Agency that approved an affordable housing designation for this project that reduces and/or waives fees required in conjunction with the construction of homes.”
Stephen Spears of Affordable Housing Kaua‘i and Makana Maeva of the Ahe Group formed Pu‘u Land LLC.
“Ahe Group and Affordable Housing Kaua‘i developed six affordable units in Kalaheo, and was happy to collaborate with the Kaua‘i Habitat for Humanity, who will build the homes in partnership with their low-income homebuyers,” Spears said. “This collaboration will provide desperately needed affordable homes for six local Kaua‘i households.”
Chuck Garrett, principal broker of Corcoran Pacific Properties, said “Corcoran Pacific Properties is a proud supporting partner of the Kaua‘i Habitat for Humanity’s Pu‘u Maluhia development and their mission to bring people together to build homes, communities and hope.”
Kaua‘i Habitat for Humanity’s 2023 housing offering will feature the six units in Pu‘u Maluhia, as well as other lots as they become available during the year. Mortgage funding will come from a variety of sources, including but not limited to the U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development 502 Direct, and 502 Guaranteed Loan programs.
